Default Greater spell focus is not "wizard feat"?

I am currently leveling up my wizard in his first TR and had planned him by taking greater spell focus at level 20 (using the character planner).

Problem is that at level 15 I noticed that I couldn't take that feat as a wizard bonus feat, and logically will not be able to take it at level 20.

Also noticed that I could take the feat Spell Focus as a wizard bonus feat.

So, Spell focus can be selected as a wizard bonus feat and greater spell focus can't? Is this WAI?

Word from a dev would be perfect!

    Thank you!
    Nosph

EDIT: I typed something different of what I was thinking... I meant Spell Focus/Greater Spell Focus!

Do you have Spell Pen (not Greater)?

EDIT: Just re-read your OP, I think you're very confused about Spell Focus and Spell Penetration. They're two very different things. Go read up on them.

Spell Penetration and Greater spell penetration raise you Spell Penetration, so you can bypass mobs' spell resistance. They are NOT in the wizard bonus feats list.

Spell Focus: <school> and greater spell focus: <school> raise the DC of the spell of that school, and they ARE in the wizard bonus feats list.

    Just an FYI

You can't take spell penetration or greater spell penetration as a bonus feat as well as the greater spell focus you mentioned.

    No idea if it's WAI.

    Cheers

    Thumbs down

Yes, shame that Greater Spell Focus feat is NOT Wizard Bonus feat. But DDOWiki and some other sites are still listing it as bonus feat.

If a user written fan site is wrong, update the site. I wouldn't expect a dev to comment on its veracity.

I typed Greater Spell Penetration but I meant Greater Spell Focus... Apologies!..

Doubt remains and word from a dev would be appreciated!

    Thank you!

I took it as a wiz bonus feat on my wiz...see no problems with it...You sure you got the first spell focus?

Greater spell focus is not a wizard feat, you could not have taken it as such.

doubt should not remain ... The user built character planner and user written ddowiki are incorrect.

Hmm, well this is good to know. I have updated Ron's character planner, so future users will not be misled.

Found a missing, outdated or better graphic on the planner, let me know here.

I understand, but the doubt is: Is it WAI? Since Spell focus CAN be taken as wizard bonus feat and Greater spell focus can't.

In the compendium there is no information about being able or not to take them. So, either both Spell focus and Greater spell focus are allowed to be taken as wizard bonus feat OR neither spell focus and greater spell focus are.

Should be the same rule for both IMO.

I assume it's WAI. It reminds me of how only TWF is on the monk feat list, and no followups. Probably to make you waste feat slots elsewhere

Actually went back and checked. You are correct. I took empower and GSF: enchantment at lvl 15 and had mixed up which one was in which feat placement.

    +1 rep for you

From the update 1 patch 1 release notes:

Wizards can now select Mental Toughness, Improved Mental Toughness, and Spell Focus feats in place of metamagic feats at levels 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20. This ensures that they cannot end up in a situation where they are unable to select a class feat at level-up.

It seems that it is working as intended, and I guess the logic would be that once they added all the regular focuses in they avoided the situation of not being able to select a class feat at level up. Why they didn't just go the full nine yards though is beyond me.

And just as a point of reference, here're the PnP rules:

At 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th level, a wizard gains a bonus feat. At each such opportunity, she can choose a metamagic feat, an item creation feat, or Spell Mastery. The wizard must still meet all prerequisites for a bonus feat, including caster level minimums.

Spell mastery is a feat that allows a wizard to choose a number of spells equal to their int modifier that already know and from then on be able to memorize it without having to look at a spell book. In DDO it's impossible to not have your spellbook so this feat wouldn't make sense. DDO's crafting has nothing to do with feats and I don't know if the devs plan on adding feats that allow you to burn plat+xp to make wands and potions.

Edit: I noticed that the bonus feat at level 1 isn't from PnP, ostensibly because in PnP at level 1 wizards get a feat that allow them to make spell scrolls.
