The 6 ranger split is a bit outdated now due to the Tempest 1 nerf. It is still viable though, but i would skip on tempest as it requires 3 feats and use those for something else. Tempest 1 now only gives about a 4% dps increase against 10% before.
Note that as far as I know, Ranger 6 was nerfed after the above build was posted. I'm not sure where a good (f2p) build is (there is a non-free build called "orcsploiter" out there), but I think that ranger 12/rogue 7/fighter 1 would work.
Feats should be the same as the "orcsploiter", and the thing that beginners need to know is that you need to take 3 points of "use magic device" every rogue level, probably two disable devices, and one or two open lock skills.
Here's dwarven 12 Rng / 7 Rog / 1 Ftr Build I made for my guildie.

You can change race to whatever you want to.
Though I highly recommend dwarves to new player because of their con bonus, means more HP.
Also compared to kopeshes and rapiers, dwarven axes are very, very cheap.
You can lower con to 14 and pump up wis to 10 to start with.
This will help you to cast spell at early level, also +1 more will save. But resulted in 20 less HP on lv20. It's Your choice.
You are not so different from other rog/rangers, if not at all, till you reach lv14. Your sneak attacks are late bloomer.
Trap gears are expensive to keep upgrading for new player.
Having best gears at level is always helpful, but not really necessary.
Consider upgrading your trap gears on level 5, 9, and 15. In my experience this should works fine in most cases, except some elite quest traps.
