I'm currently using Lucid on a very reasonable spec box that's all happy and bullet-proof stable 99% of the time, the other 1% of the time being when I'm playing DDO. Now I've only recently got into playing again for sessions of any reasonable length, but last year (granted I was running an older and thus different incarnation of Kubuntu and therefore Wine) when I did play *ALOT* it used to be rock solid, hell I used to crash *maybe* once a week at the most, playing for 4 good long days in said week. So anyway, Christmas just hit - and I finally started getting the time and dedication to play again. Now, sometimes I can go for 4 to 6 hours without a hitch, other times I'll dump to the KDE desktop 3 times in one minute, it can go either way.
Now, I'm too tired for any sustained levels of investigation and geekery - I've grown to old and cynical for such extended IT analysis... But I was just wondering if there were others running Lucid now, who had noticed a recent rise in crashing, and furthermore if they had any simple tips (I'm talking tick boxes in the wine configuration, or Nvidia settings - yes I have a Nvidia btw, again I don't have the time to be trying out different distros, dual booting or compiling Wine from source, I do have the Wine PPA added though).
The only thing I've observed (though given my reduced levels of tolerance for geekery and investigation it could simply be coincidence) is that it seems to crash less when I don't have any other KDE applications running, though logically I can see this is probably nothing to do with anything (there's no shortage of memory or processor power, ever).
It doesn't bother me enough to get angry or play less, I think it's just annoying from the point of view - a year ago when I was last playing a lot, I'd be in a PUG with a load of Windows users and I'd be the only one who'd get through the quest without dropping. I enjoyed being smug I admit, given DDO isn't written for Linux
