Default Half-Elf Lich Unarmed Monk-Wizard Fighter

    Hello guys,

Heres another weird build. Looking at this for my next TR.

Will have amazing saves from GH and Nightshield. Will focus on self buffs gh, fuzzy, super fuzzy, stoneskin, haste, rage, stand in firewalls and other cloud spells to fight.

I'm hoping you posted this because you want a real critique...

First, interesting flavor build. In a PnP game, you'd have all sorts of roleplaying opportunities that would be fun to play.

Sadly, this isn't Pen & Paper.

For DDO, you'd probably enjoy it until level 12, when you stopped getting invited to groups and raids. People will look at your build and go... "Hmm... not sure what he's supposed to be... oh well, here's a real monk or here's a real caster..."

And it really looks like it starts to shine (if only a teeny, tiny bit) at level 20, only to never get invited to any epic - unless they don't mind you piking.

    To go deeper:

    * DPS is subpar since you don't have full monk levels to increase unarmed damage. With no Greensteel handwraps and other good handwraps coming much later, you'll be subpar for a long time compared to a real monk.

    * Stun DC looks low. Especially in epic, when monk stun really shines, your monk will be fairly uselss.

    * Spellcasting is useless in epics and subpar in anything over 16. Your DC's will be ridiculously low and the only spells that will be useful will be your 12 minute buffs not to mention your spell pen will be nonexistant.

Sadly, instead of being a Recess Peanut Butter cup - two great tastes that tastes great together - you are chocolate and steak. Chocolate is good by itself, steak is good by itself... chocolate on steak... not so good.

    Ookami007,

I am looking for real critiques.

Damage really isn't that bad. Unarmed will be base 2d6, but dont forget this also gets another 3d6 from the half elf rogue and another 1d6 from going dark monk AND another 1d6 from lich form Harm. Ohh and dont forget the +3 from reincarnating 3 times.

    * Stun DC looks low. Especially in epic, when monk stun really shines, your monk will be fairly uselss.

I agree with you here. Probably going to take some of the dex away from the char and feed it into Wisdom. Would like about a 30 wisdom.

    * Spellcasting is useless in epics and subpar in anything over 16. Your DC's will be ridiculously low and the only spells that will be useful will be your 12 minute buffs not to mention your spell pen will be nonexistant.

EXACTLY, I dont want DC's. This character is a Self Buffer. Stand in a maximized, empowered firewall or other AE attacks that do not require DC's. However buffs are much better then 12 minutes. I will get 24 minutes from each buff using Extend spell.

On a side note. I have this character already built at level 14. I built the character first to try it out before wasting a TR. Its also WF at the moment so dont have any of the sneak attack damage yet.

I'm curious as to why you took IC: Bludgeon over GTWF.

I believe it was because my BAB was to low initially with all the wizard levels.

With your level split of 12 wizard/8 monk you can get Greater Two Weapon Fighting if you front-load in the monk levels into the first 18 levels. If you are 10 Wizard/8 Monk by level 18 you will have the 11 BAB you need.

    Ok,

Changed the progression of the build slightly so I could front load the monk levels.
This gives me Greater Two Weapon fighting.

I did not really read the build, It is another battle mage build, and IMO you either have enough gear/game knowledge to make these work, or you don't. To me it really is as simple as that.

I wanted to comment on two points in this post though. It has always struck me as curious as to why people try to use the base damage line of thought for unarmed attacks. the difference between level 8 monk and capped monk is extreamly small (With regards to average base damage), and really does not factor into your damage much at all (it is roughly a 3-6% increase in overall damage). to make a truly effective unarmed melee you need the effects on the wraps with dual tod rings. That is where your damage is comming from. It is not comming from the base damage. When the average mob dies in 2 seconds, missing 7 points of base damage accountss for little.

Two, I was a chef for 14 years. 6 of which was a very high end steak house in alberta canada (amazing beef!!) I can tell you with a large amount of experience and confidence that chocolate and beef go amazingly well together. If you cannot believe me, you should believe millions of spanish/mexican/central americans.

    I'm experimenting with something similar... 12 Wiz/2 Fighter/6 Monk. Currently 6 Monk/6 Wizard/1 Fighter.

If I had it to do over again, I'd front-load my Wizard levels, then take the Monk levels, and cap it off with 2 Fighter. That would give me PM II at level 12 instead of 19 (taking Fighter for 20th so I can grab GTWF as my bonus feat.)

I'm going Tortoise for the extra HP and Fire and Mountain stance at second tier. The triple neg finisher looks good on paper, but the mobs are constantly saving against it (need to bump my Wis).

All in all, it's a fun build, but it's very challenging unless you're in a pretty good group.

Though this might work better as 12 Wizard/6 Ranger/1 Monk

While I'm not familiar with exact build. I have been running a wiz12/Fig6/Mnk2 build to level 15. Wiz12/Fig3 so far and it is performing excellent.

As soon as you get lich form its fun to play. Death aura (Aoe DOT and self heal), blur, stoneskin, protects&resists, Neg.energy burst for emergency healing, evasion, 100% + undead immunities without needing to item slots.

Melee damage is ok but DPS shines when you combine it with firewall or icestorm + Death aura its very good.
When you get Torq and Conc Opp sp batteries you will have Unlimited power.
(still working on getting mine ))

Soloes better then anything I have played before. But on the neg side getting group invites from people you dont know is sometimes hard. Cant fill in for caster and when you say you are melee DPS they dont take you seriously.
Even though killscores dont tell the truth I'm 90% of time in top 2-3 in kills.

The only thing I was wondering about your build is why WIS so high and CON seems quite low. You are melee so you should be near 400hp. ((I'm at 300hp at 15th))

    Mine is THF.

Well remember con will be higher then what you see. With a plus 6 item and another plus 4 from Lich form.

    My wisdom is so high because of Stunning Fist. However, looking at this in retrospec the dc even with a high wisdom would do me no good since the formula adds your monk levels not total levels. :{

I am currently running something very similar to this on Khyber. No TRs under my belt, so yours will be a bit stronger.

That said, it's a much better character that it might seem, initially. I would recommend more str, less wis, less int. Forget any notion of casting save-based spells. You can get by with base intellect, assuming a +6 item and +2 from the Wizard Intelligence enhancements that are required for PM.

MrCow already covered the other suggestion I was going to make, which was to take your monk levels earlier so that you can get GTWF at level 18. My own progression was focused on getting to Wall of Fire early on and then riding that train to later levels. So I think I wound up doing something like:

    1-2 Monk
    3-9 Wiz
    10-16 Monk
    17-20 Wiz

Also, for what it's worth, I've never had anyone openly turn me down for a group because of my character split. I've had a few who didn't respond for which I assume the reasoning is because of my split, but even that is pretty rare. Most people ask about my build when I enter the group and I've yet to receive a complaint. I do, however, get a fair number of compliments and a lot of interested inquiry.

It's not a min-max build, but it's capable of holding its own and it's a lot of fun.

Edit: Btw, I've been meaning to post mine in the build section for a while, so I'm glad you did the work for me. =) I see that you haven't named it. If I might be so bold, I was going to name mine "Monastic Lich" after an old monster from the 2nd Edition Monstrous Manual.

Idea is fun; my own personal way I'd build it is Monk 6 / Wizard 12 / Fighter 2 with the fighter on the back-end.

I think the issue is going to be leveling; it will be a late-bloomer either way, and that's why I came to the conclusion to go the path for me. If you had a pretty full guild that was willing to group and power-level, it shouldn't be so bad.

    My preference would be
    1 monk 1
2-8 Wiz 1-7, snag wall of fire
    9 monk 2
    10-14 finish wiz to 12
    15-18 monk 3-6
    19, 20 fighter

For me, the extra STR from fighter (which is a +1 to hit and damage - balance that against your unarmed base damage) and BAB, feats, etc. is worth it to me, though it may not be for you. I also think Wiz 7 helps you level tremendously and this would get you to PM 2 right when all your fancy-smancy raid and GS gear from your past lives becomes really available.

He's mine from my build notes

Monk 3 - Toughness, PA, Dodge
    Fighter 2 - ITWF, GTWF
Wiz 3 - Spell Focus, Quicken, Extend
Normal 7 - TWF, Mental Toughness, Quicken, Maximize, Improved Crit, Greater Spell Focus, Empower

I'd probably take improved crit piercing for shortsword abuse, unless you could really get a good stun to land. Can you put more into STR and get stunning blow as opposed to stunning fist to land more reliably? Fighter AP could snag you an additional 1 on there as well; that would be dependent on your STR boosting gear I'd suppose.

Hmmm, interesting to see how the new Helf feats are going to compliment the less conventional builds.

I have a similar one planned with a 13/6/1 wizard, monk, fighter split. I went warforged for the self healing in all forms/levels but half elf sounds tempting.
