Thumbs up New to this game

What would be best for someone new to this game as a paladin build, i am interested to know what a good build would be to get the most out of this class to get used to the paladin. I have always liked the paladin class in dnd but i am curious to know what you would recommend for a noob in DDO. Would it be best to splash with a fighter or ranger build a pure paladin or prestige? I have to say i would rather be a DPSer with some good smite and self heal abilities. thanks in advance for the advice.

Hi and welcome to the game.
First question to you is, do you want it all handed to you or want to do your own research?
For starters maybe check out the class sections here, they have some builds in there.

I really don't want it all handed to me i was just wanting to know what i should do for a good feel for the class and i have checked the threads but nothing really popped out at me to show what would be great for a noob to this game in my opinion but then again maybe i overlooked a thread. thanks

this is what i can come up with. I useally dont follow any builds or stuff, as i am a old D&D player aswell, so i THINK i know what i do most of the times^^.
And so far my chars worked out, so check things, reroll if you find it doesnt work and maybe when the "Elite" posters wake up you get more input, so in a few hours.

    Wow talk about inflammatory.

First of all this he did post in the right place.
Second, asking for help is much better than the alternative don't ya think?

@ OP, It is generally recommended that you gain 32pt builds before attempting Pally.

Multiclassing works differently between PnP and DDO. Play 20 levels of pally all the way (I did and enjoyed it muchly, predominantly in groups). As you level up you can play with Ron's character planner and get an idea of what multiclassing might have done, but resist resist resist that urge until you plan out such a thing.

You won't suck badly if you build a pally starting with minimum 16 constitution, half decent charisma and a chunk of strength. Take the Toughness feat at least once. Don't bother building for AC this time around - especially on your first build it's unlikely to get to any meaningful level at end game - instead focus on things that give you guards, resistances, immunities and hit points (if you have enough sp at end game you can pretty much continually keep 30 point resists on yourself whenever you need with the spell). Also don't worry too much about what enhancements you pick, as long as you meet the minimum prerequisite abilities for what you're likely to want. You can redo all your enhancements very easily without paying anything material. I went Hunter of The Dead 3, then later switched to Knight of the Chalice 3... both are good in their own way (tho KoTC is technically superior at end game).

Your only other decision to make is following the TWF chain (requires some DEX ability investment) or THF - being feat starved, THF is a bit easier to achieve.

Junts has a guide for building a pally which tells you all this and much much more about your options. Read it through, especially the bit about the Holy Sword spell...

That's my advice, apart from: Above all, enjoy your journey!

Edit: Someone mentioned unlock 32pt builds before building - that will help. Mine was a 28 tho, and while not first choice, was welcome in some raids run by one of the larger guilds on Ghallanda. You can also always greater reincarnate later to rectify that if you figure your points are a bit low.

Default Pally's if build poorly can...

...be really bad. and no fun to play. unless you are set on a pally you may want to try another character type and see if you like the game. I think the game is real fun but if you get frustrated playing a pali you may in turn not like the game. Start with a fighter and if you find you like the game you can make a pali later.

    Three thoughts for you:

    1) Most folks will say that dual wielding (two-weapon fighting or twf) is the optimal dps, and they do it with feats on the paladins, not with multi-classing part ranger. If not twf, the two handed fighting (thf) is the other dps choice...and for paladins, many go with the falchion for the high crit hit rate. I haven't played such builds, but that is what you will see, and the advice is sound (unless you go with the Defender prestige...sword and board is great for that, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are twf and thf Defenders out there).

    2) Go with a prestige! The prestige enhancements are nothing but pluses....not taking one is akin to walking past money lying upon the ground. :O

    3) Don't sweat the game too much...No matter WHAT build you go with, there will come a point where you will wish you had done something a bit differently, especially with a first toon. At that point, you might consider rerolling, or using resurrection...but don't quit. :-D You might especially pay attention to your favor points, and go after 1750 total favor inorder to earn the 32 point build for the server (unless you are willing to just buy the 32 point favor outright from the DDO store). Once 32 point build is achieved, building a new toon with the extra points AND the knowledge gained from your game time is very tempting (you should by then also have in-game wealth in order to gear out a new toon better than your first toon was).

    Hi, welcome.

My favourite resource and the one that I can encourage you to explore is the "Paths Revisited" thread by Tihocan

    http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=232660

That has new player friendly builds of every class with multiple build styles (I think there is 3 paladin options).

For a new player without paying money I would suggest a THF (Two Handed Fighting) Paladin, probably human. Paladin is a little tricky as a class to build has 28 points but it isn't too bad. 6 points into constitution, 10 into strength and charisma which leaves 2 points left over for ... intelligence. You can cast spells by finding an owls wisdom clicky/owls potions/owls wand, you don't need dex as a DPS build. Skills: balance, intimidate, UMD. Feats: toughness, power attack, improved crit: slashing, THF line, extend spell and ... one more? Skill focus: UMD maybe.

Remember to take the archivist necklace when you do Misery Peak in korthos!

Thanks for the advice, I will definitely use the threads posted to see what I think will be the best fit for my play style and let you know what I do later once I get higher level. For now I thank everyone for the advice, and the threads on pali creation guides/info.

It might take you a week or two to get all those past lives and +4 tomes... no sense in rushing on your first character.

+1 for understated sarcasm. It'll probably take a year or more of heavy playing to get all that on a toon.

Plus, you can't use a +4 tome at 6, despite that the builder will let you.

    Hi Welcome

You're going to have a lot of fun with this game!

You seem pretty committed to the Paladin. However, I did want to mention that a lot of new players find this class difficult to start with, especially with only 28-pt builds (assuming you have not bought 32-pt builds yet). A popular solution I have seen is to play a Fighter first until you reach 400 favor (which comes very quickly). At this point, you have access to the Drow race, which includes 32 build points with "free" points in Charisma, an important stat for most Paladin builds. You can follow the Drow build advice in one of the Paladin paths on the "Revisiting Paths" thread referenced earlier in this thread.

This would be my recommendation to you as a new player. However, ANY advice on this forum should be taken with a grain of salt, so if this isn't what you want to do - don't do it! Experiment and play how you want to play. Most of all, have fun in the game. Asking for advice in the forums as early on as you are is a very good sign, and if you continue to improve yourself in this way, you will enjoy the game more and more, and others will enjoy playing with you more as well.

    Happy hunting!

Talking Thanks for the advice everybody!

Thanks for the advice that I have been receiving, as far as the tomes I know for a fact that I can use +1 tomes as early as level 3. So in theory I could use 4 of them but like I said I am a newer player I was just seeing if it would be a good or bad idea to add favored soul and monk to the paladin. I do know that I will take at the very least 14 levels of paladin since I will gain access to the level 4 spells. I have even considered making a lv 14 Paladin/ lv 6 ranger as a build (for access to ranger buffs, twf, and a familiar) but I am somewhat undecided right now as to whether I should multi-class and if I do what would be the best route for my playstyle. When I played dnd I was more of a assistant healer/ smiter type character with mainly dps rather than tank abilities as the fighter is a much better tank and clerics have better healing but a lot of the auras that a paladin has as well as the ranger buffs are very good for party usage. I know that it would take a while to get the player that I posted above as true resurrection and building the characters required would be a m-fer! and take a long time as far as the tomes I could always just buy them from the store and use them on my build. For now I do not have the 32 pt build but plan on rectifying that as soon as I can. Any and all comments both positive and negative would be greatly appreciated and yet again thanks to all who have contributed and happy gaming to all.
