Metamagic and stat/lvl damage

I have heard that Maximize and empower effect spells with variable numbers(blade barrier, WoF, Fireball)

Does this mean either or any metamagic feats effect spells like energy drain? I doubt they would but I wasn't sure.

A useful method for questions like these is to review the ddowiki and see which metamagics can be applied to any given spell. For instance, Ray of Exhaustion can be Enlarged, Extended, Heightened, Quickened, or have its materials Eschewed, but it cannot be Maximized or Empowered.
