Each person put their hand on a bible while they did the trade.

Trust, basically. First he showed me the tome in a chat window, then we cycled through 5 or so characters, me forking over 1-3 mil plat from each. At the end he passed me the tome. His forum reputation was sufficient for me to do it that way.

The event wasn't around at the time.

I didn't have to grind out my wealth, and Stanley can "easily" grind his back, if it put a serious dent in it in the first place.

It was a serious dent - around half my wealth at the time, and I still don't have a single character with enough now to max an AH bid. It was all cash that I had accumulated over the years since the game launched. Since the trade I've gotten less than 2 mil back (none from the CC event...), but I still have plenty for my needs. It was worth it to me.
