When i'm on my cleric i get slightly annoyed when people ask if i'm healing specced. (For whatever reasons that happened a lot on low levels)
I always answered: "Nope, i maxed int & cha, i'm piking specced".

Some people were really confused by that and started to say sentences like "Uhhh, hmm, for real? Whats that build?"

Wow, that's lame. You're a lot more tolerant than I am, if something annoys me sufficiently (and some days it doesn't take much- calling my rogue "the rogue" will do it), I just rightclick-ignore. But as to why, I think you have it nailed, insecurity. Also general lack of awareness of the right way to behave (the e-word is a little effete for me).

There's no need to brag while doing it. The guy boasting about his damage will be checking the kill count only to see your crushing him. The 80 AC Pally will be watching you intim all the mobs away from him or zerg ahead and kill them before he catches up.

You can still crack jokes and pretend to be a nice guy during the beatdown.

I think the question is: why the beatdown in the first place? Why the need to flaunt your internetz-uberness? That's what the OP was really about...

Meh. The people who need to brag are just filling holes in their ego cause by gaps in performance and lack of knowledge. They turn it into a numbers game and act like they are working a full time job playing D&D online rather than having fun. If I even have slightly better twitch skills than they do, those numbers they brag about dont shore up the gap in performance. Acting like min maxing and metagaming are rocket science always amuses me, so at least there is some entertainment value in it.

Yeah - u and hecate raise valid points - of course it is necessary to talk about what you are and have when it is relevant for the quest. If I join a ToD on Slog and see there is no obvious ac tank I will post certain items to show that I'm a guard barb with air etc, so people can consider me as a DPS tank for horoth if the clerics agree. I'm not saying we should NEVER talk about our builds and what we have. And pride plays a part too - if I loot something I have been after for years, I wave it around a bit. But I want more silly banter!

Theres no need. Most D&D heads dont care about slightly larger numbers. They care about group result through forced cooperation. Most of your holdovers who care about bantering numbers were usually exposed to fantasy gaming through other MMOs, where DPS is more absolute due to there being far fewer variables in a less situational game.

I never played table top, or otherwise roleplayed anything. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy the lore. And believe me, I constantly strive to improve my characters, and I crunch numbers - compared to the fluid dynamics **** and other economic projection stuff I do at work, its cake. But I don't see the fun in, just because someone called out how good they are, that they need to be shown that they really 'aren't all that.' Who cares? Let them have their moment of enjoyment. Have your own. Build your groups the way you want, play the game. Grind away at the gear, permadeath it, whatever.

Yeah, the person bragging about their AC or their DPS is wasting their breath. Same for the person who's determined to show them their not as good as they think.

Yeah, I never remember being asked that 2 years ago. You just join a group that says looking for healers, and if you had the cleric icon, you was healing. Not to say there wasn't the occasional battle cleric, but they normally made sure everyone knew that they weren't group healing.
