    Default The Untouchable - A Favored Soul18 / Monk 2 (By Request)

    Build Name: The Untouchable
    Author: Sigfried Trent
    Requester: Axlett
    Last Updated: 12/01/10

Key Words [Favored Soul, Monk, Unarmed, Healing]

    Objectives
The requester wanted a damage casting, healing, and melee capable favored soul, possibly with a monk splash. He also wanted this to be one of the elven races.

    Design
I toyed with making a whirling steel monk/favored souls but there are too many feats involved to make that work very well and still do good damage casting. I stuck with the monk as it adds evasions and some much needed feats, but went with unarmed combat as the characters primary combat style. What you loose in base damage you make up for in faster attacks. You could still use longswords and in some situations they may well be superior so keep a few handy.

I went with half elf so that you could make this guy pretty durable since they don’t take the con hit other elves do and can enhance con as well as a human. Dilettante paladin piles on to the already strong saving throws. Between all this you end up with a sizable chunk of HP for a healer and through the roof saving throws. AC isn’t half bad due to the monk levels and clerical buffs either. Layer on the leap of faith power and this build is neigh untouchable.

Powering the damage casting and healing we have the full array of damage casting enhancements as well as quicken and extend. It takes a while for all this to develop and at the tail end of the build we bump up light damage a bit since pretty much nothing can resist or avoid searing light. A few items on the spell list may get swapped around as some of the early picks are only relevant at low levels. Healing amplification lets you save the stronger spells for groups while you can use the cheaper ones or items to top yourself off very effectively. Raid healing should be no sweat and soloing a breeze if you use mana wisely.

    Play
This is a pretty easy character to play as it has few weaknesses and a very fire and forget kind of combat style.

    Variations
You can switch things around a bit but most of this build is fairly locked in. Human can work just fine for an extra feat and a little switching of gear. If you want arcane scrolls for buffs and the like you could take the sorcerer dilettante instead of paladin and then invest some enhancements in the Update 8 line that allows higher end scroll casting. I wouldn’t try 28pts with this build, the stats are already stretched thin. A TR version of this build could be a powerhouse.

This may seem like a silly question, but I'm a returning player and I'm not familiar with all of the game mechanics.

I like the sound of this build and I already have a level 5 so far, but from the start I've had a burning question.

Is this build supposed to wear armor or robes? I can't figure out if he should wear armor, and get the AC bonus, but lose centered or if he should wear robes to get the stances and willpower bonus to AC.

Other than that I'm loving this build so far and am really enjoying it.

The build would wear robes for the ability to use evasion in addition to remaining centered for the unarmed monk combat animations.

Empower Healing isn't a great feat on a FvS. Maybe drop that to fit in Improved Crit Bludgeon instead? And Fire is a better Energy Resistance to have than Cold IMO.

Too much charisma, and either too much or too little wisdom.

If you're going for casting, then a 16 starting wisdom is bare minimum. If you're not going for casting, then 10 is the maximum.

I have the minimum charisma required for paladin Dilettante which provides additional saving throw bonuses and I don't like being required to always wear a charisma item at all times to be able to cast, especially at lower levels.

With wisdom, its driving both will saves and armor class on this build so its not there for casting, but making it a dump stat is counter productive to part of the builds focus; incredible defenses.

I made a very similar Helf FvS. The synergy between paladin dill and FvS is amazing. Basically, Helf is the new WF.

Personally, I feel that it is safe to dump-stat WIS. My impression is that will saves are simply not very useful.

Secondly, on mobs without evasion, BB will still be useful, even if it takes a little bit longer to clear things up. Against mobs with evasion, you won't be doing damage with BB either way, since mobs with evasion have high reflex.

So having a little bit of WIS won't change the instances where BB is useful. You sacrifice a little bit of speed for small fraction of the time for a better stat distribution which is useful all the time.

Will saves are almost entirely pointless. This is a character who is eating a library's worth of tomes; get a phiarlan mirror cloak for the low level SR against Kobolds casting Hold Person.

When you can self-buff with Pro:Evil, FoM...will save becomes almost meaningless. My FvS only needs to attempt a will save maybe twice a month, when going into epic disco balls. That's not worth build points. Almost no monsters cast will save effects in the first place, and nearly all of the ones that DO get cast you can be flat-out immune to. Will is by a wide margin the least important save.

2 points of AC (once you actually get it) is also not going to get you anywhere.

    Question Noob Question...

I am seriously looking at this build, but have questions before I take the leap. First: Enhancements taken show
2 FvS/2 Monk/16 FvS, Is it possible to multiclass like that? Second: What enhancements do you take at creation, other than Helf dil? Any input would be appreciated! Thank you!

Me too. I'm actually trying to see how this Untouchable can be adapted as a Monk-splash variant of Superior Soul (Dual-wield longsword Human 20 FvS). My goal may be out-of-scope for the OP's intent.

Im not too familiar with monks. So I have an honest quesiton

If you were going to go with longswords and make WIS a dump stat what benifits would a monk build have over 2 levels of fighter? I can understand if your going with wraps, is it the saves?

This is a waste, 2 feats to do less damage???

Regarding the build, saves should already be good enough, I would skip Dilettante: Paladin and go Rogue instead for extra DPS.

Less? Whirling is for GS weapons, 2 monks lvls give 1d6 dmg instead 1d8 fro long sword. GS do 1d10 if u can have Mineral II u can have Keen.
Whirlind is for wear long swords without penalties and to keep monk stances. Without u're not centered.

    Yes, less.

Handwraps have comparable damage to GS when considering ToD rings. After that, when you consider 100% offhand damage, +2 AB and 10% faster attack speed then yes, handwraps do more damage than longswords, even GS longswords.

The only time that Longswords have an advantage is in stat-damaging situations or other times where the slightly better critical range would count.

I actually thought of a similar build by myself, and when I came across this post I was wondering how to adapt it to my idea. Mainly, it would be a TR from my current monk (thinking the extra 2 points would actually go in int, since I love skill points) and it would be unarmed only combat with a 17/3 split instead of 18/2. I know I would lose a ninth level spell, but my DCs wouldn't be good enough for implosion and I didn't want to be the one casting Mass Heals at Harry anyway (though that is sure to annoy a lot of people, I'll be sure to explain I'm not just another healbot). I mostly want the new split for the philosophy and access to finishing moves like aligning the heavens, which should make the casters like me more. I would still choose Paladin dilletante, and was mostly wondering what new stat/feat allocations these modifications would call for.

would this build stay in wind or ocean stance?

and you said it has a high ac, but about what range would that ac be?

What do u think about Devout Handwraps from Shadow Crypt for low lvl and ToD ring then?

Im going TR1 my wiz and i want to do FvS who can beat and with evasion, but before TR i want the complete equipment, I dont have half-elf so i go human what i've to do?
