Well, I found out recently what happens if you don't finish Haywire Foundry in one attempt. Got all the way to the room with the rune wheels, and they always bug me out, so I spent about an hour in that room spinning and spinning, not having any clue what I was doing. (after wiping out all the oozes of course)

Once I actually decided to put a little investigation into exactly how to turn the wheels, it was so easy I wanted to kick myself. FINALLY spun them out to get the key, and wouldn't you know it the steel golem boss (and his clunky friends) was able to survive whatever damage the last of my SP (was out of DV....should have shrined, but was in a hurry, also didn't know I'd get locked in!) via Disintegrate. Had him down to a small slice of HP, which I just couldn't touch no matter what I tried. I KNEW deep down that a recall was in order, but after the frustration of the rune wheels, was NOT going to just give up. The clanking hulks followed me around and helped 'break in' some of my equipment for me, I'd say for about 10 minutes. I had no choise, and had to recall to fill up mana and return to teach them a lesson.

SOOOO...the gate that the infected warforged was so kind to open for me earlier was locked down, and the lever on the other side upon re-entry. Guh....guh..........GAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!

Shut 'er down, and the next day, popped the entire quest in about 15 minutes. Wheel puzzle took me one minute, instead of over an hour (still SO embarrassed about that one, is it me, or is this game sometimes capable of intimdating the logic right out of you?), it doesn't get much easier than primary colors. /

In the end, I was satisfied, and had 10 seconds to go before the explosion when I finished out. First time I had that happen though, getting locked out and having to reset to do the entire quest again. Are there many more quests that will lock you out like that?

Oh, and since these are supposed to he horror stories, the call was coming from INSIDE THE HOUSE!! :-O

You can't even d-door if you are doing it solo. Always leave a hireling by the lever. I could beat on you for being a noob, but we all have that those learning lessons, hopefully only once! As far as the golems go, I always keep a greater construct bane wep on all my chars, even the casters. By the way one of the cold storm spells, sleet storm or whatever, also does bludgeoning damage which will hurt them.

    Thumbs up

Thank you, Dex, yes it's Ice Storm that adds bludgeon. I'm getting a decent grasp of the general mechanics, and as you said, sometimes you just have to learn the hard way. It's ok to beat on me for being a noob, only three months in and I'll freely admit that each time I play I realize that I actually know less and less about the grand scheme of things in game, but I do pay attention when lessons are taught!

As for Proof is in the Poison.....yeah, the title itself makes me brace myself. I'm still a bit of a nervous jumper, so back when I did that quest I took an acid bath, for sure, and died in the process.

Appreciate the feedback, +1 rep for you, for making things a bit clearer on that one. The 'leave the hireling' thing is definitely something I don't regularly practice, gives me something to work on. I'm just glad I finished the thing, and it's really not that difficult. I enjoy surprises and failures sometimes, and would have enjoyed that one if I didn't waste so much time trying to force a square peg into a round hole.

    K

P.S.-You wanna laugh at some noob behavior, if only you were there to see when I hit "T" by accident the first time. I don't mind a little ribbing, it's all in good fun.

That's actually how I met some of my oldest friends on the server. Sure, it was terrible, but it was still fun. XD

My horror story from the weekend:

Running "The Snitch". All is going well, until we get to the room where Roderic summons the rust monster. Quest objective says "Gather all the party near Roderic". We do - except for the fighter who is still in the pipe.

We call out to him - nothing. Is he AFK? Is he linkdead? Who knows.

We wait 10 minutes. Finally the guy comes back. "Sorry guys. I was eating dinner."

Had a similar incident in, is it "taming the flames" or "or lair of summoning" when you pop the chest the elder fire ele and all his friends pop. One player goes for the chest while we are trying to heal and buff up after the mephit fight, all of us being half dead. We are screaming at him on voice, "Don't pop the chest!". Of course he pops it, luckily I was still an evasion pally at the time, last man standing once again. So I am kiting the ele around, run out of LoH, taking turns between wand whipping myself and attacking, while the whole party is berating this guy (because they are dead and have nothing better to do), who is still not responsive, yet managed to loot the chest before dying, then he comes back on voice and says, "Oh sorry guys, couldn't hear you, I was watching The Chapelle Show..." Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!

I recently had a quest go bad, and I came to forums to scream about it and flame the group I was in.

And nobody flamed me back, which is probably the worst tragedy a troll could encounter.

    Talking

Here's a story from my early days of adventuring:

I had two veteran fighters helping me out in a notoriously tough quest. A hero sahuagin popped out all of a sudden, and the two guys went in headfirst into the fight (as do all guys with big blades), with me hiding behind some boxes and flinging out occasional spells. The guys said that it should be easy downing the critter, as they've done it countless of times, but this time the sahuagin proved a bit too much to chew for the guys. I decided to be a bit heroic and spammed loads of spells onto the critter. But boy, the sahuagin was like having the virility of the Sovereign Host himself, with his health barely budging throughout the 3 vs 1 skirmish. In the end, the creep downed all of us.
As we all lay dead, I looked at my fingers, and saw that it was resting flatly on the shortcut key for an Empowered Cure spell, which lay just beside the Magic Missile shortcut. I decided to play innocent, and whistled a bit. Blamed my 'strategic placement of shortcuts' for that, afterwards.

    1. Horror story

Posted an LFM for Proof is in the Poison, got 5, waited 30 minutes for a cleric. Before we went in I ask "Does everyone know this level? its hard, wait for the rogue to do his job and do not pull the first lever down the ramp before the rogue does his thing." We went in, someone went straight down the ramp and hit the lever whilst we were cleaning the bridge. I managed somehow to fall off the bridge just as the traps went off wiping the entire party except me and the guy who pulled the lever, somehow he was stood behind the lever and was unafected by the flailing traps. I said good luck getting out of there and we all released. 2 guys dropped including the cleric we had waited 30 minutes for so we reformed outside and put up a new LFM with sub-note please know level. another 30 minutes later we got a second cleric. I repeated the above question and the warning about the first lever down the ramp. Guess what happened? One of the new guys ran straight down the ramp and pulled the lever while we were on the bridge. at this point among cries of stupid noob my party dissolved and i was left in a party with said noob. I just said ty for party and left. I assume he got the sarcasm

    2. Not quite a horror story more of a brave but doomed from the beginning attempt

Once again via LFM this time i joined was not leader. Gladewatch Outpost defence, it filled up fast and we were in before anyone realised we didnt have a healer. i was the only one with any non-pot healing power (was on my palladin toon) and we stood bravely exchanging bravado until the onslaught began, we fought valiantly but in the end toons started to drop. I was last man standing and managed to get the stones tinto reach of the res shrine but by now my Lay Hands were depleted and I had to rest after the others had leaving us with no healing power we fought on but in the end with the rest shrine depleted and it having become a game of rez die rez by the shrine we sadly lost the outpost commander and had to release. One guy dropped and we got a cleric went back in and we owned the level

    3. Horror story 2

Hall of summoning. After I soloed normal and hard I felt id be ok with a noobish party so took in some noobs from my guild on elite. big mistake. The chat box was full of OMG / OMFG [repeat to infinity] as people ran into traps died got rezzed died etc I did the rezzing and in the end ran the sonic traps like 4 times ferrying soul stones back and forth; one guy made it through the traps (i dont know how?) and then triggered the fire elemental which he ran from and brought back to the shrine. I just said sorry guys, this is fail and left the group. I dont know how long they stayed in there getting cained by the traps and the fire ellie maybe they are still there.......

lessons to be learnt, never go anywhere without a cleric and a trap monkey

I've had lost of rthem lately, ut this is the one I remmeber best:

Quest- framwirk (hard or elite, cant remmeber)

The guis want to do the optuonals. ok ... takes us toooo loooong, obout 15 min or more just for that. And I was thinking that was not a good start.

A member looses the internet line and we're hoping he reconects soon. He didn't, but i wasnt the leader so couldnt dismiss.

We enter the minotaur area and things seem to go well, but after the first peace, all goes down. Instead of taking a shorcut and avoiding ALL the minotaurs we could have avoided, noone listens to me and go the longer way.

The healer was good but had difficulties becous of all the corners and stuff, seems he couldnt find a good spot on the higher position. People start spreading instead of remaing together, first deaths start and a member after two or three deaths (of his own) says nothing and just quits.

The rogue keeps wanting to solo stuff and dies constantly even if i told him noto to gooround alone ...
    the wiz - same thing.
I had the wand of stone and was saving it for the last monotaurs near teh boss, but when i died, someone else picked iti up and used it on other fluffy minos that couldhave been killed normally. Ok, it's a choice.

at the end, I was going crazy and wanted to leave, was convinced it was a whipe, but the others semmed to be in good mood (strangely).
After an hour and half, maby more, more then 40 deaths, the bos got stuck in a wall- the only gui that couldhave killed him was a wiz , and just didnt do much damage as he could have.

5k xp for two hours wasted.
    The end

It took me almost 2.5 hours soloing Gwylan's Stand as a lv 8 fighter. I went slow, took my time, and kept drooling over the amount of xp I was about to get. I had one set of boxes left to click. I was running over to it after looting the last chest and power went out. I sat there for fifteen minutes telling myself that what just happened, never happened. Well, it did.

As level 9, I tried soloing Stormcleave. Same thing except my power didn't go out. Took me about two hours to get to that **** boss that summons the hoard of undead and I got dealt with. All that and downed about 60 serious heal wound pots and nothing.

Default Whisperdoom Elite is a B****!!!

First trap - I can't find it. We hobble through it. Second trap, a few more deaths - I realize I had on my haggle helmet, not my +int one. D'oh! I manage to remove that trap. At the named ogre mage, all but the ranger die. I instruct him to grab stones and run for the shrine. He does. We have a shrine battle. It wasn't pretty. But we manage to eventually beat him.

On the way back to the first trap, I blow up the trap box because I still had my jump clicky goggles on. D'oh! again!

Long story short - we eventually complete. We recalled out at one point. I hired a Djinni to repair our stuff (I couldn't even afford to pay him, since I'd just made a purchase in the AH prior to playing the quest). The monk was naked with a hat on by the end of the quest.

By the time we finished (yes, we eventually beat it), 85 deaths.

    I had 19 of them.

    What's your worst?
Party levels were 10-14, I was the cleric (with 922 spell pts) plus we had rogue, ranger, fighter/barb, wiz, & sorc. As most of us know, if you agro a "few" spiders at a time with your speedy guy and long distance DPS them on his run back to the party + summoned creatures, you can keep up with minimal potion & wand usage. However, as you get to the zombies, redletter bosses, and endgame area...things became dicey at best. Everyone hollering, "Don't lead Whisperdoom to the shrine!!" "What are you all doing?!?!" "Move, move, move!!!" Of course, all this chatter along with fireball sounds, chittering spider legs, clanging of khopeshes and warhammers.... made for quite the Keystone cop confusion motif! I did manage to Rez our ranger who was then able to outrun the baddies around the tunnels and keep them AWAY from the shrine, but....I believe on ELITE the spiders and such respawn in the nearby areas and so it was difficult at best to get everyone rez'd, restored, etc to a playable level. After (I think) 55 deaths, we were through and did NOT succeed in killing Whisperdoom due to her high regeneration rate! Can anyone share their insight as to the best way to kill Whisperdoom at these player levels???

Whisperdoom Elite is my horror story, too!

We had a great party, except for one complete jerk. After we got to the caverns to look for Whisperdoom, we find her. Then while the entire party is occupied, the jerk leaves us and starts zerging everywhere to grab all of the collectable things so that the rest of the party can't get them or roll on them. He quickly puts us on dungeon alert red while we're still dealing with Whisperdoom, which made it extremely nasty! The jerk gets what he wanted and drops, while one of us manages to get to the shrine and slowly sneaks us all there. We ended up beating the quest, and I've never been back again to do that quest ever again.
