    Default Laptop for wife

Hello guys/gals of DDO, I come seeking advice.

I'm planning on surprising my wife with a laptop for Christmas, but don't have the time to go balls to the wall with the idea.

I'm looking for something in the $600-$800 price range, which should be more than enough for what she wants to do with it. She is basically interested in email/facebook/watching TV shows or the occasional Netflix movie.

I was thinking Dell just for the ease of ordering/customizing/shipping, but not entirely sure I want to go that avenue yet.

Any helpful thoughts or suggestions for people more educated on laptops than I am?

    Thanks in advance.

This is a comparison of 3 computers that look pretty decent for the price. I looked from 600-750 to give you a little room for shipping and such without going over your 800 limit.

I think that the 700-750 range will give you the most "bang for your buck". Personally, I am a fan of the Toshiba Qosmio line, but those are a little bit more expensive than what you are looking for. I still think that Toshiba makes a good product though, so I included a Toshiba in the page above. There is also a Dell that is not bad at all.

Based on what your wife will want it for I looked for laptops with a larger screen, around 17". Should make for excellent movies and all 3 computers I linked will have more than enough processing power to do whatever she wants it to do.

I also used Newegg.com because I have always been impressed with them. Tigerdirect is also good, but I have known a few people that were not happy with them (no idea why, just know that they were not).

    Good luck on your search

Edit: Just one more thing...TOSHIBA Satellite L675D-S7022 17.3" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit NoteBook would be my personal choice. It is a Blu-Ray player, has better speakers, a 17.3" screen and should meet all your needs quite easily, and is only $700, and the shipping seemed to be reasonable. (I am in Iraq and the shipping to here was only $25, I would guess that stateside shipping would be around 13-15.) It is one of the ones listed on the page I linked, but just in case it does not work right for you I wanted to at least give you the name of the computer I would choose.

I would highly recommend that Toshiba that Wren posted in that link. They make good stuff, and that looks to be the best value. I also tend to shy away from Intel graphics, like the other two have.

Dell used to have decent customer service, but my experience with them in the past five years has been less than satisfactory. However, my experiences with Dell might simply be a couple of isolated cases.

stay away from Dell - customerservice is nonexistent. I think it's a new customerpolicy.

I'd say hit on a decent price compare site you might get a whole more bang for the same buck.

If she is wanting to just surf the internet and things of that nature, a mac would definitely be one of the top choices. I'm really not a mac fan but simple stuff like web surfing is what mac does best. Things like email are asking for viruses and a mac would last a lot longer. Only problem is they are overpriced so not sure if you can get one in the 600-800 dollar range. Just my input.

Edit: doh I didn't see you already ordered something.

****... when I read the thread title, I thought you were looking to trade your laptop for my wife. I was all ready to get the specs on your rig (and let you know about hers), only to be disappointed in finding you are only buying a laptop for your wife.

I wasn't suggesting that I was interested in that sort of trade, just that it was what I read the OP as meaning...

If she doesn't need it for serious gaming, a used Panasonic Toughbook can be a wise buy for the right person. They are laptops with Stoneskin cast on them...quite difficult to totally break. Check out the failure rate for every other laptop compared to Panasonic...it is staggering.

You could get an eBay warranty on it and still have change leftover. If you're worried about durability, get one of them. They will be lacking on performance compared to similar priced other brands though, but probably not so much that a non-gamer/geek would notice.
