Switching from tempest to aa

I have a level 12 ranger (10 ranger 2 fighter) and I want to switch from Tempest to Arcane Archer and I would like advice on how to do so.

Is the only way to do this successfully do two feat swaps at fred?

Any suggestions/guides for which feats I should/need to switch out?

Yes, you would have to swap out most likely your first three feats at least to qualify for AA. Usually, rangers take Weapon Focus:Ranged, Point Blank Shot and Mental Toughness at levels 1, 3 and 6 (Respectively). Hopefully you didn't dump Dex at character creation, as an AA that can't hit anything is pretty worthless.

I actually started out pumping into dex with the hope of making an arcane archer but at the last minute went with tempest. Here are my current stats:

21 str
28 dex
16 con
9 int
16 wis
8 cha

I have point blank shot due to my first feat swap, I currently need mental toughness and weapon focus: ranged weapons in order to get the enhancements. Unfortunately a lesser heart of wood is a bit out of the question so I guess I will just have to wait another 6 days. Money and shards really aren't a problem.

Sounds like you're perfectly fine then. Just keep in mind that AA's, like any ranger, get the free TWF chain. Don't let being an AA keep you from sitting down and smacking something if you need to. Kiting mobs around usually just aggrevates the party (Unless you're told to kite for aggro management or something similar).

You're assuming 1)The OP wants Tempest 2)Tempest is really that much better than AA. I'm pretty sure the same build, one with Tempest and one with AA, both played by equally competent players would prove to have a very small, if not neglible difference in dps.

If I were to multiclass into sorc, wiz, or bard, could I take one of these at that first level:

Bard Energy of Music I, Sorcerer Energy of the Dragonblooded I, Wizard Energy of the Scholar I

And meet the requirement for AA? Because my original plan was to do two feat swaps and get weapon focus ranged and mental toughness. But if this works, I can get weapon focus ranged and then multiclass and get the AA prereqs sooner rather than later.

Yes, but with 2 Fighter levels already, that would leave you with 17 Ranger levels. I believe the +5 summonable arrows and Slayer Arrows require 18 Ranger levels. Ignore this if you are an Elf/Half-Elf Arcane Archer

Before update 5, Switching from Tempest to AA might have been a bad Idea. Now, Tempest is not that much better than AA.

You are all haters. I'll just say it. the AA is the coolest PrE in the game. Cooler than Batman, Superman, two 28pt build fighters, and a great white shark on a near overdose of PCP combined inside a NASA space shuttle. It's like a Chrysler minivan vs an F-15 jet. Anyone can drive a minivan but you actually need to be a justifiable bad ass to fly an F-15. AA = Justifiable Bad Ass. Look it up, Pre Alegbra.
