Default Internet connection severed while playing

Hello, I have been experiencing an issue since Mabar where I will lose my internet connection entirely during gameplay. It first happened the week of Halloween, anytime I tried to move through House J, I would no longer have internet connection and have to reboot my modem. I was fine playing other characters with no trouble, but the character in House J was completely unplayable. Just trying to log in to that character would disconnect me, not from the server, but from the internet completely.

I figured it was just an issue with too many toons in the same zone causing lag, although I'm not sure why that would cause my internet connection to go down. It also only seemed to happen on one particular toon, as others were able to participate in Mabar.

After the festival ended I have not had the problem again until today. I was in the Tomb of the Wizard-King in Menechturan and internet connection went down. Trying to reset modem and logging back in as that character just disconnected me from internet again. I tried twice and then switched to another toon. The other toon is fine, no problems, back in Stormreach, but the toon in Menechturan is unplayable without losing my internet connection. This is the same toon as had trouble during Mabar.

Does anyone know what this is caused by? I'm confused why I would lose my internet connection entirely and not just experience server lag or get kicked from DDO. Also, why does it only happen on the one toon, and only recently? I'm not incredibly computer savvy so maybe there is an easy fix I can't find?

    The solution is simple

    1) Step away from the computer
    2) Call your ISP and get them to fix the problem

Your modem disconnecting from the net has nothing to do with DDO.

This would be my assumption, too. Except it has only happened while playing DDO, and once it happens once, reconnecting to DDO on that character will shut my internet down again. Browsing the net or playing another game, no trouble. Reconnecting to DDO on another character, no problem. I'd love to blame my ISP but I have only seen this problem happen in specific instances directly related to DDO, and only in the last two weeks.

The game uses a different connection method than most web based apps/programs and even games, if it's resetting your modem most likely the firmware for the modem or router is either corrupted or not the correct version for that model.

In some instances I've seen this come up with some ISP's that install custom firmware in their user devices (modem/router or the combo devices) and either the firmware didn't load correctly and was corrupted (usually causes permanent resetting though whenever it connects) or the installed firmware is incompatible with DDO's connection method or the device.

In a memorable instance this was also caused by a cat using the modems cable as a scratching post, he had just damaged the wires enough that it would cause the modem to reset every few minutes (granted that was happening whenever the modem was used but illustrates that usually a reset like this is something hardware related).

I tried updating the firmware on my modem (which was outdated), but it didn't resolve the issue, and now other toons are experiencing similar lag followed by complete disconnect from internet. It's possible that the firmware was corrupted in download, so I will try again and see if anything changes. Thanks for the suggestion!

I also need help with this frustrating issue. And I have determined that it is not a ISP issue, but rather with my router. I can play DDO just fine for endless hours when I am plugged in with a hardline to the modem, but whenever my router is involved, whether wired or wireless, I lose connection from DDO after 10-30 minutes of gameplay.

I am using a Belkin Wireless N Router (which I know isn't the best), but it is clearly the problem. Does anyone know any good troubleshooting on the router end of the issue?

It would depend if the router is rebooting or purely dropping DDO - are you powering off the router to re-establish connection or does it resume after a while?

When you lose the DDO client connection, can you still use your browser to visit websites?

I would configure port forwarding on the router to my PC (unless you have multiple PCs playing DDO) and check the logs on the router.

What model number is it and is there a newer firmware for the device?

I am having the same problem, except only my connection with the DDO Server drops. Connection itself is fine, so its confusing. There isn't a duplication of ports or anything, DDO just lags and then has a severed connection. Since Mabar started this has been occurring periodically and now that Mabar is over its at least every 15-30 minutes.
    Ideas?

I'd suggest creating a new thread instead of necroing a three year old one.

Include more information about exactly what you are seeing. Does the windows just disappear? Error messages? etc Also check your event log for events when this occurs.
