If this is what I think it is, then this was scheduled weapons testing. Odd that the various news sites quote Navy and Air Force personnel as not knowing anything about it. Breakdown in communications somewhere, I suppose?

CBS is a relatively large network. I think it's just that the government is putting pressure on the media to ignore this story. Happens all the time. I know. I'm a journalist.

I've asked around my cbc friends and one said they weren't even allowed to touch the story.

Because the origin is not unknown it was a classified military test of some sort. Happens fairly often, see Area 51. Otherwise NORAD would have registered the launch and there would be a flurry of activity in the area.

I'm pretty sure that when the cruiser I was on did missile quals off the coast of California we didn't alert the news media.

Actually, they might not have reported on it, but they did know if tests were going on (unless it was something Top Secret) speciffically so something like this wouldn't happen. They have a Public Affairs Division for a reason.

Did the military warn us when the atomic bomb was going to be tested in New Mexico? No. Did it win us the war against Japan? Yes.

There is a certain level of secrecy that is needed in the military in the interest of national defense. I'm willing to accept that. Americans have ****ed off just about everyone in the world with our interventionist policies. If we didn't have the biggest bestest military on the planet I'd be a little concerned about that. Secret missile launches are par for the course. At least so that I can keep playing DDO.
