Extremely poor performance when dead or underwater

Does anyone know of any settings or anything that can be done about the incredibly bad performance when one is dead or underwater?

The game just plays horribly in those circumstances, and it takes quite a bit to slow my computer down.

try turning down the quality of "surface reflections" and maybe shadows under options --> adv graphics. If it's still really bad, turn off surface reflections. When you die or are underwater, your graphics card is under more stress by the graphics.
