    Default Horc Staff Build

Is this build going to be 32 or 28 pt?? Ah well here's what I got:

28 point build: (lvls into Str)
    Str 18
    Dex 16
    Con 14
    Int 8
    Wis 8
    Cha 6

32 point build: (lvls into Str)
    Str 18
    Dex 16
    Con 14
    Int 8
    Wis 12
    Cha 6

    Skill Points:
    Balance
    Concentration
    Jump

    Feats:
    1 THF
    Monk1 Toughness
    Monk2 Power Attack
    3 Stunning Blow
    6 Toughness
    Monk6 Dodge
    9 ITHF
    12 Improved Critical Bludgeoning
    15 GTHF
    18 Toughness/Weapon Focus

    Enhancements:
    Jump II 3
    Tumble II 6
    Wisdom II 12
    Ninja Spy I 10
    Monk Healing Amp III 22
    Clever Monkey IV 32
    Air Stance IV 41
    Horc Str II 47
    Horc THF DMG II 53
    Horc PA III 59
    Earth Stance IV 68
    Racial Toughness II 71
    Horc GWPN Aptitude III 77
3 pts remaining and no idea where to put em

If you're going THF with the staffs because you want to use em you will want to run air stance for the double strike chance, which benefits THF more than it does for TWF. Stunning Blow will be used on trash mobs. The only reason I went Dark was for the Shadow Fade ability that Ninja Spy gives you which gives a 25% incorporeal chance for mobs to hit. The incorporeal bonus even works against raid bosses, so for a character like this it is ideal. You will have to find a +1 dex tome to qualify for Air stance IV, but that's less difficult these days than you might think. It is probably not a perfect build, but it's at least a good starting point to work from.

    Horc Twf Build:

    28pt
    Str 16
    Dex 16
    Con 14
    Int 8
    Wis 12
    Cha 6

    32pt
    Str 17
    Dex 16
    Con 15
    Int 8
    Wis 12
    Cha 6

    Skill Points:
    Same as THF build

    Feats:
    1 Toughness
    Monk1 TWF
    Monk2 Stunning Fist
    3 Power Attack
    6 Toughness
    Monk6 Dodge
    9 ITWF
    12 Improved Critical Bludgeon
    15 GTWF
    18 Toughness

    Enhancements:
    Touch of Death
    Ninja Spy II
    Wisdom II
    Clever Monkey IV
    Fire Stance IV
    Horc Str II
    Horc PA II
    Racial Toughness
    Monk Healing Amp II
    Air Stance IV
    Water Stance II
    Earth Stance II
    ToD Prereq's
    Jump II
    Tumble II

If you haven't noticed by this second build I happen to love Dark monks. The Shadow Fade ability alone is good enough reason to go dark. Touch of Death is really only an awesome bonus on top of getting Shadow Fade. Stunning Fist will end up with an okay dc at end game with this build for trash mobs. Assuming you get a +2 wis tome, Wisdom 6, and some Stunning +10 Handwraps the dc will be 35, which will stun most things in normal non-shavrath content. In Epic Content your stunning fist DC will not be the most reliable. In epic content you may have to switch to Fire stance for the +2 to hit over Air stance, but Air stance will probably be your main stance. Once again, Shadow Fade is your friend, use it always. Shadow Fade is more important than haste! The 25% miss chance for ALL enemies (including raid bosses) cannot be stressed enough. In addition, going Ninja Spy II will allow you access to Short Swords as Ki weapons. While they deal much less damage than your fists, Ninja Spy I grants proficiency and Ninja Spy II grants Improved critical, so you could use banishing Short swords and smiting short swords when you needed to.

I was thinking about a THF monk build using Q-staffs and I was doing some research and calculations. In another thread in this forum, TWF and THF is compared for H-Orcs for a fighter/barb build. There are lots of good arguments why the two forms are comparable on a H-Orc Barb/Fighter.

However, on a pure monk build, TWF with fists is the better choice from a dps point of view since

    - fist damage increases with monk level - Q-staff damage stays at 1d6

    - unarmed off-hand attacks get the full (!) Str-bonus to damage each blow, whereas THF gets 1.5 Str-bonus on each blow

Another thing to keep in mind: Q-staffs break easily - it is annoying if you have to repair after each quest or even worse your main weapon breaks within the quest. But you can use your favorite handwraps on every rust-monster and slime in the game and they won't break.

That said, just roll a H-Orc monk, take the Q-staff and have fun - but don't take the THF feats (just the H-Orc damage enhancements) but take the TWF feats instead. With higher levels (higher fist damage) and more off-hand attacks (ITWF, GTWF) TWF will be the better choice from a dps point of view.

But on the other hand - play whatever you want to play - its a role-playing (!) game after all.

    Cheers
