Default Chimera's Fang - Weapons comparison

So, I built a new paladin today, and put a Chimera's Fang together for it...

And quickly found myself reaching back into my pack for my +3 Scimitar.

So, why exactly does this weapon, which really you shouldn't get ahold of until lvl 7, or even 9, do poorer damage than a vanilla weapon easily found off the AH or in quest? The Dragonmark thing doesn't actually -add- that much to the weapon - parrying, and stacking 25% fortification, at the (minimally) cost of two feats, does not make me want to use the weapon.

So, at level 9 when you can get full use out of the weapon...you're stacking it up against something like Prysuul's Bane, which can punch a fairly common DR...

But wait, that might be unfair...how about a ml 4 Bastard Sword?

Or a ML 6 Bastard Sword with Parrying?

    So....really...what gives?

Compared to the Jidz-Tet'ka Bracers and the Blademark's Docent, the other items in Sentinels come off extremely poorly - my monk wore the Jidz-tet'ka from lvl 5 to lvl 20, my Warforged usually wear the docent from lvl 5 to lvl 16 or so...The Chimera's Fang lasted for less than a rank. Midnight's Greetings didn't ever find a home on my Rogue, despite him both having the weapon from level 4 on and being an assassin. Elyd Edge would be situationally useful on my Bard, but she's usually too busy flinging around a Falchion and beating heads in.

Bastard Swords = Bastard children of DDO. Named or not.

The base item is really just a crafting piece you can put in your hand - its only useful when you can make it Epic, and even that is highly questionable.

Right, sorry...let me focus that in a bit better. (And the Sunblade is a bastard sword, anyways)

    Multiple instances of Fortified Defense.

    Chimera Fang not equipped.

    Fun times.

Its funny that they fixed part of it, but not the other part.

It used to allow anyone with the Dragonmark to equip it, and gain Bastard Sword Proficiency. Not just while equipped - all the dang time. So equip it, then equip what you really want to use.

    Oh well.

Would it be a decent weapon if they changed the Shocking Touch to Shocking Burst?

I've recently purchased and started running this chain on my lvl 9-12 toons, and want to grab this sword; but then doubt that I would ever actually use it.

If it was -shocking- it would be worth it. Well, Shocking and Silver/Cold Iron. :P

AS it is, you're better off grabbing the nicked weapon from the Sharn Syndicate chain that grants Parrying and Acid.

Yes, every weapon in the Sentinels pack is bad; often strictly inferior to weapons you can acquire earlier.

Here's me explaining the Chimera's Fang problem you noticed:
