Been playing for a year now.....
Problem started on the afternoon of 11/01/2010. That morning around 6am everything was fine. Logged in and played...was even suprised that the Mabar Fest was still up. At around 2pm, was having connection issues. It would try to attempt to connect like 20x and fail. A few times, I would get the character screen, log into the game, but then it would boot me. A few times, I would get the character screen but as soon as I chose a character it would lock up on the loading screen.
On 11/02/2010, I started getting the message "The underlying connection was closed: Unable to connect to the remote server." And that time it would cycle on attempts to connect to a Game Data Center but keep failing.
I've looked at the Tech Forums for clues and ways to solve this issue but haven't come across anything helpful as everything suggested failed when I gave it a try.
I'm able to connect to the internet of course, I'm able to play other online games with no problems so I"m at a lose.
Anybody else ever experience a problem like this or know how to solve this issue?

Hello Benghasu, are you by any chance located in Florida or the South-Eastern United States? If so this may be due to some reported ISP outage/routing issues in that area. Please read the post here.

Yup that did it. My ISP is with Brighthouse in the SE Region.
Followed your instructions and I'm logging in now with no problems as of 0600 11/04/2010.

Same problem here... see my post earlier for details.. (Arizona, not Florida)
On three of my computers I can log on, but on one I cant.... makes no darn sense.Many fell things dwell in the dark places of the earth...

Saw this on the LOTRO forums. Will try it tonight and report here:

If you are receiving this error currently one new cause of this issue that has cropped up is a trojan that has been setting Internet Explorer up to use a proxy address of http://127.0.0.1:50370 if you are getting the above error, double-check that you are not using that proxy setting.
Open IE (used by the game launcher for its system-wide connection settings) and click on 'Tools' > 'Internet Options' > Connections (tab) > Lan Settings (button) and disable the "use a proxy server" option and click ok twice.
Immediately after that update and then run a full system scan with your antivirus and antispyware tools just to be sure the infection is not active.Many fell things dwell in the dark places of the earth...

I just scanned my computer found couple of trojans. Removed them. Reinforced my computer again with a firewall. Originally Posted by RandolphIV

Just came back to the game and am having this problem. I checked Internet Explorer (and my other browsers for posterity) and none of them were set to use Proxy. I also ran a virus scan, and nothing, which wasn't shocking since I don't browse the internet much on this computer. When I try to play, the splash screen pops up and goes through the motions until it gets to the Data Centers part, where it hangs, and then I get the message about the connection being closed. By the way I'm not South Eastern US, but I am eastern, though none of the IPs that were affected are mine.

I'm from Ireland, I did not have proxies enabled, My scan found one Trojan and I got rid of it, but it is still only showing the underlying connection thing,
