How would you make a build like this an effective light monk? I'm not very good at doing the debuffs so I was wondering...
Thanks![]()
Until you post:
1. your build
2. the toon's name (you've blanked it out, meaning you're scared somehow of us knowing the name of your toon)
3. anything else actually viable to the discussion
, then you are Trolling, and it's not appreciated here. If you'd like, I can PM you a place you CAN go to do such things as this without worry, but I doubt you would be welcomed there.
Have a wonderful day!

Darkrok published a light version of this build that he called Stupefy. Basically, you just change out Dodge for a feat required for Shintao -- like Luck of Heroes. Then, adjust the AP for the requirements, and punch away.

Was also wondering.. would a half elf make a good monk?
Hey Hey,
Im tring my main into a monk for a PL tomorrow. I have never played the class tho I do have 2 monk past lives already (dual boxed a caster...) I really want to see what they can do as my friends have been encouraging me to play one as i love to button mash.
Would you reccomend light or dark (if dark il follow this completely - except switch pali pl for impr crit in level progression) to get the full monk experience? Im thinking dark to cap then switch to light for epics? Is this the accepted practice for most monks? I love playing with light monks in epics...uber. Dark monks i havnt been nearly as impressed as but im thinking the extra dps via sneak and ToD is better for leveling.
I have regen stonedust wraps, garments of equilibrium and a tonne of twink monk gear including bursting tod rings (really want to give the class a good nudge - new is always fun and want to get the best out of them). Is there any other twink gear I should look to aquire?
All my knowledge on monks comes from reading and watching. I know i wont have a good grasp on the class until I play it myself. If theres a monk guide anywhere pls let me knw as I wouldnt mind going over a few things. I have 3 ftr, 1 pali and 2 monk PL already so in good shape to see what they can REALLY do.

Hey Nick,
For twink gear I would try to get some metalline handwraps. It helps a lot through the lower levels. Also a good set of Holy handwraps will go a long way. Some really nice +10 Stunning handwraps will help as well as you can hit a ******** Stunning Fist DC on a TR character.
If you have access to any Sneak Attack damage (Ninja Spy, Half-Elf/Halfling, Sneak of Shadows, Splash level) then you will want to invest in the Unbalancing Strike. If you were to compare a Ninja Spy to a paladin think of Stunning Fist as Smite Evil and Unbalancing Strike as Divine Sacrifice.
As for Harminous Balance/Inevitable Dominion I would suggest H.B. for a first incarnation and I.D. for a second. Each has it’s strengths and plays differently. And, surprisingly, work well together in a group. (Unlike multiple bards.)
IMHO, Shintao Monk isn’t really worth taking until you can hit tier II. The only tier I ability worth anything is the passive Protection from Evil effect. Fists of Light is better than the current Smite Taint ability at low levels. Tier II gets you the useful Dismissing Strike and Jade Strike. Dismissing Strike works like the Dismissal spell and not the banishing weapon enchantment. (Meaning: You will be the only melee in the reaver raid having any fun.) Jade Strike is nice for the increase to party DPS. Tier III brings you the awesomely powerful Kukan Do which is a Will save, ranged, stunning Fist and Jade Tomb which you will enjoy on a lot of stuff.
Ninja Spy takes some work to get “Just right”. Due to some of the twists and turns the monk class has taken since it was added to DDO you will see a lot of really poorly played Ninja Spies. Poor players will simply focus on Earth strikes and Touch of Death. While this isn’t bad by itself it totally ignores all the sweet debuffs that a Ninja Spy is capable of. It also ignores the fact that a Ninja can have aggro and maintain sneak attack damage. (This is what makes Unbalancing Strike so awesome.)
Your learning curve is really going to involve Ki management, setting up your keyboard so you can easily access your special attacks and managing your finishers. Really, I have no easy advice for this as every person’s playstyle and computer setup is different.
Things worthy of Standing Stone going EXTREME PREJUDICE™ on.:
- Epic and Legendary Mysterious ring upgrades, please.
- Change the stack size of filigree in the shared bank to 50. The 5 stack makes the shared bank worthless for storing filigree in a human usable manner.
- Fixing why I don't connect to the chat server for 5 minutes when I log into a game world.
- Fixing the wonky Lightning Sphere and Tactical Det firing by converting them to use alchemist spell arcing.
- Redoing the drop rates of tomes in generic and raid loot tables.
I tend to favour Light 3-9, Dark 9-20. I'm still not convinced enough by Shintao to give up Dark, it's too much fun. Once I finish my main monk's TR, I'll get back to the Light WF side-project I have going but I prefer Dark overall.
If you do try out Light early on, then the Jidz bracers, fire stance and the Imp Recovery line can make for some nice sustained self healing so it might be worth getting the bracers if you don't already have them. There's something very satisfying about waltzing through elite quests without touching a pot let alone a shrine.I also slightly improve it with Ranger Devotion as I just can't not level a monk without a ranger level for sprint boost these days. Plan to LR the ranger away at 20, but with Horc extra action boosts and monk run speed it's a zerger's dream.
I'm up to 10 now on the TR (got distracted by starting an arcane TR with a friend) and loving it. A few holds here and there that kinda make me wish I'd got some FOM boots from VON before TRing, but I have something close to this and it's a solid build. Running in fire stance is nice but I'm necking those haste pots like there's no tomorrow.
Hey Nick.
I've played both light and dark. Like some of the above posters, I think light is a bit easier for leveling, because of the mini heals and stuff, but I'm a huge fan of dark endgame. They have a really nice balance of offense (3d6 sneak damage, touch of death) and defense (25% concealment and at-will invis). By endgame and epic, 25% stacking concealment means much more than mini heals. Because of stunning, holds, and unbalancing strike, sneak attack damage is generally a very nice source of universal damage for trash mobs. Added to touch of death, I prefer this to the more-specialized shintao PrE.
A good player is always going to skew the balance. Monks are pretty hard to play well -- beyond the minimum expectations. If you can get the hang of void+dark+void, you may understand the other half of my passion. I know that you appreciate the value of crowd control as you use sap, trip, and stunning blow on your fighter. Being able to stun one monster and charm the guy next to it means you could run with no caster if you wanted without worrying. Even with one, monks have limitless CC -- only dependent on the ki you can generate.
As others said, a good pair of weighted handwraps will serve you well. At low levels, AC makes leveling more enjoyable since you get such natural bonuses like dodge and monk AC bonuses.
However you end up, I hope you enjoy your monk experience! Sounds like you have the right attitude -- rushing through TRs is sure to make you dislike the class.

Touch of death previously did 500 damage untyped, per fist. It now does 500 damage with a fortitude save for half, and is negative energy damage. It now works with the dark+dark+dark finisher, which adds +25% negative damage. So, now you can see triple 625s if you have good DCs.
This was a big blow to those who made monks with no WIS, as their fun punch saves pretty often. There was a lot of crying.

Hey guys thanks for the replies much appreciated. Level 6 atm just got ninja spy 1. fun times. I rushed to 6 as theres alot of strikes id like to get too asap. Enjoying the big fella alot altho the range of the wraps is still a little frustrating. I've tended to sack things on elite as I just can get enough hits in on normal/hard to get a feel for the finishers.
Thx again!

awesome, i started with almost exactly the same build as a 34 point build and i didn't know you had posted this[took 1 less wis for 2 more int for skills] and i put level ups into str
i'll have to fix my enhancements to match because i didn't know how good some of those finishers were. as is the dcs on touch of death, curse of the void, and touch of despair are 38. when/if i get some exceptional str items and better tomes i'll probably respec to wis.![]()

What would you think about replacing tharne's goggles with the epic time sensing goggles?
