    Default Communications, a passing thought

So, was reading one of the DA threads and someone mentioned how unreal it was that beasties at the beginning of a dungeon could tell beasties at the end of a dungeon how upset they were they the players didn't stop and buy their cookies, or something to that effect.

ADn I thought, well sure, but players in different areas of the dungeon can communicate too, so no big...

...hey, wouldn't it be interesting if they couldn't? Players, I mean. What if players needed to be within a certain proximity to communicate. Wouldn't that be an interesting idea for a dungeon. Split the characters up an hamper their communications. Make some mech where they have to get word back and forth to each other via a runner.

Just a thought, might be fun in an different and weird way, like Rainbow.

I like this idea - after a certain proximity, you would not be able to communicate with them over voice. But...what about /tells and general chat? It seems it would be severely disruptive to manipulate these communication methods. You could hamper group chat, but then general chat would become the workaround, and would aggrivate others (all of those instanced quests now "cheating" in general chat).

The "fix" would be a cleric with a Sending spell. Perhaps the cleric can activate Sending, which turns on a -1 SP tick per second (or every couple of seconds). While Sending is active in a party, all party members can communicate. When it's off, they can only communicate when they are not blocked, or when they are within a certain range.

Yeah. I think this is likely the case. Too easy to work around. And communication is too critical.

So, I guess it's just best to let the kobalds chitter to each other, and have their Dungeon Alerts.
