    Default Madstone Boots on a Light Path Monk

    Okay, so I know that the Madstone effect short-circuits the light path finishers, so this isn't a question about what does or does not work when Madstoned.

    Rather, my question is to ask whether Madstone Boots are still the best thing to have on the boot slot even given this limitation.

    I've been running Reavers constantly on my Dark Path WF, and will be hitting my 20th shortly. I've been looking primarily for Madstone Boots (and a Dreamspitter), since I had assumed I would be TRing into another Dark Path build (probably Horc). However, lately I've been thinking about TRing into a Light Path Dwarf tactics build, and was trying to figure out how this affects my search for Madstone Boots.

    Basically, the way I see it, is that Madstone cuts off the three useful finishers for Light Path monks:

    1) Healing Ki
    2) Aligning the Heavens
    3) Grasp the Earth Dragon

    However, 2 and 3 don't really seem all that relevant since I'll be wearing Boots of Anchoring when number 3 is needed, and number 2 will generally be before buffing at the beginning of quests or after shrines (where I can simply hold off on Madstoning). This just leaves number 1, which does hurt a little since the build will have around 250% healing amp, but I'm not sure if that's a big enough deal to stop me (after all, I'll still have healing curse hitting for 2s and 4s, and pots will hit me for a ton).

    So what do y'all think? Madstone FTW or not?

    It depends. I would roll on them with my light monk. There are fights where I would use them and fights where I would not. They wouldn't be bolted to my feet nor would they never be used.

    It also stops the other finishers like earth-earth-earth, earth-wind-fire. If you can give those up, I suppose it would be fine.

    Huh. With all the dark monks using them, I had never thought they would stop the normal chain finishers. That could be problematic, as I do like the earth finisher. :/

    Hmm, I'm almost sure the Earth, Earth, Earth finisher works while madstoned. I'll have to test that later.

    The boots are much much more situational on both light and dark monks than almost all other melee (paladin being the exception).

    Personally the +2 str +4 con is not worth giving up the flexibility of the build for me in most situations.

    madstone rage works with the 3x earth/dark/(and others) finisher, but not with 3x fire finisher, all the light path finishers (and others). It just all depends on if the finisher is classified as a spell or not.

    Thanks for the clarification. What qualifies as 'others', out of curiosity?

    means there are probably more that fit into either group but I can't remember it off the top of my head atm.

    Considering ToD now has a save it should both be classified as a spell and benefit from damage amps. Guess Turbine isn't strong on consistency.

    Why? The earth finisher has a save, and it isn't classed as a spell. Is stunning blow/fist a spell?

    Just because something has a save doesn't mean its a spell.

    Back in the day when I used to be light I hated my madstone boots. The 3x light finisher is sort of a crucial component to the light path build. And being locked out of that really sucked and kind of ruined the flavor for the entire light path build for me. Some people prob wont care, but I sure did when i was light.

    So I suppose my next question is: how often does the Madstone effect proc? Haven't really seen numbers on it, but from a lot of posts I've read, would seem to be quite a lot.

    I can see your point about being locked out of it being irritating, though. I used to run a light path human build and enjoyed my healing from the light finisher. However, it was also when I was starting out, so I couldn't really afford to chug pots. Now I chug them like a wino on any toon. :P

    Dude, it procs all the freaking time. When your light path its more than annoying. It is simply infuriating. I pulled them on my light path monk when i first started playing. Put them on, hated them. Banked em. Then when dark path started to improve, I simply fished them out of the bank. Dark Path + Madstone Boots = Win.

    I've heard people say 15% of the time when you are hit - this fits with my experience.
