    Default Bastard sword Intimitank

With Bastard swords giving glancing blows I was thinking about trying to make a bastard sword and shield intimitank. I was going for more of a DPS build than full on DR from shield mastery, and am still by far NOT a pro at character planning. So any help you could provide would be welcome! Thanks in advance.

Two big questions I had was am I taking Combat expertise too late? And should I dump Fighter Toughness IV for Fighter Critical Accuracy II? (Something about Kensai?)

Well, sword and board dps blows as such, but might as well maximize it where you can. I'm noticing you have a lot of stuff to increase AC, what AC do you project being able to get? Since if you can't get usable AC, while the intim is good, you might want to go twf and go damage, or if it's more about DR, then tower shield is an option.

No dragonmarks? No Human versatility? No skill focus intim?

14 intel is excessive raise Cha eat a +1 or +2 tome lower intel to 12

    Why two handed fighting?

My intim tank w/ Bastard sword in hand and shield I get 61 AC and 68 intim also have 44 umd for scrolls etc.

The two-handed fighting line increases the glancing blows of the bastard sword now that it is coded like a two-handed weapon for glancing blow purposes.

Once you get an Epic Armour, you won't need all those Armour Masteries, since you just won't be able to get your DEX that high.

You start with 14, and a +2 Tome and +6 Item put you at 22. That's the DEX Bonus on Red Dragon Plate (with Greater Nimbleness in the Blue Slot), so unless you're planning on Exceptional bonuses to DEX, you probably won't need more than 1 of those enhancements.

First off, if you spend all your time in S&B mode, you are fail as tank, IMHO. You should spend most of your time in DPS mode - either THF or TWF - and only switch to S&B when you really need the AC.

Speaking of AC, if you're intending to tank at endgame, you need to plan out your build & gear carefully. In particular, you need to figure out what your MDB in your armor is gonna be and figure out how to hit that DEX; or conversely, figure out what your max DEX will be then figure out how many armor & tower shield enhs you'll need to get a sufficient MDB. You can't just throw in every AC / MDB enh and call it a day if you don't even know what you're aiming for.

Third, it looks like you're trying to boost your saves a bit. Rather than burning feats on them, consider a paladin splash for Divine Grace (+CHA bonus to all saves) and taking Force of Personality (use CHA instead of WIS for Will saves). That would let you dump-stat WIS and put a few more pts into CHA, which will also boost your Intim score.

Fourth, one advantage of humans as tanks is the Sentinel DMs let you boost your Intim score higher (up to +6 w/all feats & human enhs IIRC); so consider adding one or more of them.

That build is a good starting point.

I would consider dropping WIS to 8, increasing CHR and taking the feat force of personality. The feat uses your CHR bonus instead of your WIS for will saves. You will be wearing a CHR item for intimidate and you won't be able to fit in a WIS item. Assuming you use no tomes, that will result in a +4 to your will save.

Skills - don't take swim, it just isnt important as you will have underwater action items.
Make sure you have a rank in tumble and put the the rest in UMD. Even of you can't use scrolls the ability to use some wands and RR items will be more useful than swim.

    Feats:
Don't take shield bash, if you want to do some DPS while blocking take cleave. If you can, fit in great cleave as they are on seperate timers. Cleave only interupts blocking momentarily and will do full weapon damge to everyone in an arc around you.

Without additional feats for intimidate you will not be able to lock down raid bosses. You need at least 2, preferably 3 of SF Intim, bullheaded, DM of sentinel, fighter past life (not available to you yet). You will also need to be wearing a +15 intim item, +6 charisma item and +6 chr skills greensteel item with appropriate buffs. As it is you will be able to get "most" trash mobs.

Toughness is good, but that many may be overkill. With +2 tome, +6 item, GFL and minos you will be sitting at around 600 when stanced with only 2 toughnesses. With your AC that is enough.

    Enhancements:
You need to take the stalwart defender line. It gives huge boosts to AC, intimidate and some DR, STR and CON. Some of that is only available through the stance which slows your movement. Thise will reduce the need for the really expensive armour mastery enhancements.

Also, armoured agility could probably be better spent elsewhere. Human versatility is a great option for both the skill boost (UMD!) and the damage boost.

Check out the build I just updated, here http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=281417

It might give you exactly what you're looking for.

Thanks for the info and feedback. So I have come up with two possibility's.

This one includes cleave, but my concern is it required power attack which can not be use at the same time as Combat Expertise.

Don't forget stalwart defender II gives +1 or +2 to intim and III adds even more to intim I believe.

My intim tank is also 2 lvls of bard for the heck of it but with a base 14 intel (20 with item) 32 pt build i got lots of extra skill pts I used for umd. I didn't go rogue because he has heavy armor that took a long time to build. But its all your choice..........nothing like using no fail heal and raise dead scrolls any wand I want to as well.

Don't take Cleave or the shield feats; do take PA sooner. As a tank you use PA +2H weapon when you're in DPS mode and CE + S&B when you're in AC mode; so the sooner you have both as options the better, IMHO. If you're trying to max your Intim, you want Bullheaded, SF Intim, Sentinel DMs x3, and all Intim enhs (both ftr & human); but that costs a lot of feats & enh pts, so it might be too expensive.

On your enhancements you need to take stalwart defender III as well as just I.

I would take the power attck + cleaver option rather than the shield block feats.

Like I mentioned above, you will need a dps mode. A dps mode requires power attack. You wont be able to use CE with it, but just switch modes when you decide to tank.

On a build like this it shouldnt matter much. Khopesh=DPS. In dps mode he should be using a two hander.

He isnt going to hold agro with a khopesh or a bastard sword when using a shield so it doesnt really matter all that much.

One of the reasons I was looking at this build was because the bastard sword glancing blows would (at least I thought) help hold the agro.

Also Lesser Setinel says "Activate this ability to harness the bloodline of House Deneith to cast Protection from Energy two times per rest. Also allows you to use your Least Mark of Sentinel an extra time per rest. Protection from Energy allow you to absorb 12 points of energy damage per character level." I mean energy absorb souds good and all but how does it help with intim, and is it really worth a feat point? Didnt realize you need the extra levels of DM to get higher levels of stalwart defender.

If your party is attacking a single mob being the glancing blows will hold the others until thay are damaged by another.

note that in DDO it is near impossible to hate tank while using a shield as the hate enhancements for tanks don't work.

Go true neutral so you can use Light and Darkness for +6 protection and saves.

That will be tricky for a paladin splash

Also, the chaosgarde bracers (+2 dodge to AC) have a lawful requirement. ALso Light and Darkness in a heavy shield, not a tower shield, so a +5 towershield still grants better AC.

OP - Looks good, I'll take Horoth you take Suulu!

Looks solid enough. I would delay Dodge, PA, and CE to bump up FoP, THF, and Weap Spec. Odds are at low levels you'll actually spec for Kensai then switch to SD later on when AC becomes more of an issue. I'd also squeeze in GTHF, maybe at the expense of Dodge or GWF. Any chance you can squeeze in paladin CHA enh + human CHA enh for +2 CHA? Maybe by dropping Armored Agility? EDIT: and FYI, AC Boost IV is not a SD III pre-req, so you can drop it too.

BTW, at endgame you could aim to get the Epic Chimera's Fang for tanking, which grants you BSword prof. free if you have the Sentinel DMs. That would let you swap out BSword prof. for another feat. Pair with ESoS as your DPS weapon.
