Did they update the sounds on differnt bows and crossbows or is it my imagination?

Yeah!!! My ranged weapons have never sounded better. The throwing axes are the most improved. The new sound is like a throwing axe whereas before it was an annoying high pitched sound.
I always wondered if I hated that pre-u7 arrow sound because it was annoying or if it was because I was shell shocked from all those dang skeleton archers. Turns out, it was because the annoying sound was annoying.
U7 bows sound great. I also heard someone ratcheting away with what sounded like a repeater crossbow in VoD. Very good sound improvements!
That said, I do miss the old Dwarf sound effects. Before when I took a critical my dwarves shouted "GAaaah!" Now Dwarves shout "Oh shi-!" Too juvenile IMHO.

I really hope the new sound effect doesn't reduce ranged attack speed, only 16 more levels to go until I can do a full check.
However that being said they do sound okay, but I at my current level it sounds more like a game of kerplunk PLUNK PLUNK PLUNK.. as before it was like WHOOSH ARROW OF DOOM! I wonder what it sounds like with max BAB and all enhancements.
I am guessing a lv20 AA with all speed buffs and items will sounds like a thousand marbles hitting a large plastic floor over and over.
