Asking help from computer gods

My computer stops running during games. I purchased this computer to replace my older computer that lags too much. I was forced to use my old computer and lost my level 7 permadeath character in the new raid due to constant lag.

Is there any one who can help me find the problem why my new computer stops working about 10 to 20 minutes into computer games? I cannot buy a new one because of family constraints.

Home edition
version 2002
service pack 2
AMD phenom(tm) 9500 quad core
processor
2.20 ghz 3.25 gb ram

Symptoms: Plays ok for around a half hour then freezes. Requires manual turning of of off switch to restart.

I can't invest money but have time and patience. Can anyone help?

I have bee ntold that DDO client has a memory leak, or at least used to. If this was ever addressed or not I have no idea, but I can certainly say from experience that after changing chars 3-4 times, I always had to restart the DDO client due to constant screen freezing.

Are you flipping between chars frequently? This may be part of the problem.

if it is a newer PC, you probably have all the Windows "protection" bells and whistles still turned on. While having the firewall running is always a good thing, you probably want to disable automatic updates, defragmenter (system scheduler) and virus scanner as if left to default settings, they run constantly and this is taking from your CPU cycles and your bandwith.

Turn off Windows Live if you have it, I have never seen such a useless system resourse hog, short of the actual Windows operating system itself. Just remember to manually run both the windows updater and antivirus occasionally still after disabling.

If the game freezes so badly that it requires you to manually restart your computer, it could be your graphics card overheating. My aunt's computer does that when hers overheats. What sort of card do you have? You didn't mention that in your initial post. I'd recommend downloading this program (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html) to monitor the temperature of your card/CPU.

As in, the screen freezes?
Things slow down, and the application closes, dumping you to your desktop?
The whole thing just abruptly turns off?
Any telltale signed before it rolls **** up? Like streaking, or tearing graphics, or odd squares on the screen?
Does it seize in a repeating sound?
Any blue screens showing with error codes on them?

There are just a ton of different possible things that could cause problems,
which means just as many solutions.

All too many times the 2 main gaming problems seem to be: Heat and Power
Make sure everything inside is clean and there is clear area around the machine to breathe (all fans working, etc)

Might look at the power supply and see what rating it is, and compare to the white papers on your processor, board, and videocard to make sure you are just not pushing enough power.
Video cards be a hungry breed for sure, especially under gaming load.

Hopefully an easy solution can be found!

My old computer has graphics card problems only with DDO and not with other games. After a few minutes, GPU recovery comes on, and the recovery gives me enough time to log out and manually shut down before the screen goes black and it's unrecoverable save for a hard reset. That's on WinXP, but I've noticed on my Win7 system that I can play other games at higher graphics settings than DDO for near equal framerate. Both videocards are ATI.

Screen freezes. Sometimes the mouse still moves for a short time. Cntrl alt delete does not work alt f4 no response. Waiting does not work. There are 3 fans, I tried using air to dust off the video card, not much room to work but it still malfunctioned. I selected video game mode over default under video card hardware but still freezes. All games freeze eventually some like total war freeze immediately.

55 oC is exceptionally hot for a video card (or any electronic device) to be running at. I would crack your PC case and make sure the fan is running, and/or that the card is not covered with an excessive amount of dust.

If the fan is not running, then it certainly needs to be replaced, if you are lucky you may be able to just replace the fan itself. If you are overclocking the videocard, dial it back down to normal or perhaps even a little lower if possible. Dialing your graphics down to minimal settings ingame would help a little bit as well, less load = less work and heat being produced by the card.
