Arrogant Bastard is not an IPA. It is a dark ale. As is its brothers Oaked Arrogant Bastard and Double Bastard. Now Stone does make three IPAs. Their standard, The Ruination and The Cali-Belgique. Sorry I am an avid Stone drinker. I hate to see the bastard proclaimed an IPA.

We suck.
just for some info:

http://www.germanbeerinstitute.com/styles.html
they only listed a few, if you break it down you get 1beer/town
oh and dont let u get fooled by oettinger, its just cheap, in any habbit
That is the best/worst advice I've seen, given to someone who's just starting to discover the wonderful world of beer.
While we're at it. Try Double bastard Ale from the same brewery. That'll get your hair straight.
And if you're visiting Sweden try and catch the Närke Kaggen stormaktsporter. Hands down the best beer in the world (currently rated #2 at ratebeer.com's top 50).
My store of choice is 2 min from work, and on my way home... http://www.binnys.com/
Binnys carries a very nice selection of microbrews from all across the country. However I still have to drag my butt across into Indiana if I want Gnaw Bone from Oaken Barrel http://www.oakenbarrel.com/
This is my local pub of choice http://www.brixies.com/
Notice the Free Bacon Mondays !!!
I <3 living in the burbs of Chicago. New Yorkers I'm sure get that same warm fuzzy
In a way I still envy you. Even though I'm blessed with easy access to the "Närke kaggen Stormaktsporter", I still find that the best and most interesting beers is from the US; unfortunately most of these brewery's only ship domestically.
I've tried to import the Pliny IPA's from Russian River, but it's just impossible. Even though some bar's serve it in Sweden, it's like $20 a bottle which sucks when my friend in Palo Alto buys em for $4-5 a bottle.
...I need a beer.
Edit: The wonderful beer "Närke kaggen stormaktsporter" means:
Närke (region in Sweden)
Kaggen (keg)
Stormakt (reffering to the years 1600-1700 when Sweden were the major power in Europe)
Porter

Guinness or GTFO.
Seriously though, give Guinness a try.
Also, I like Hobgoblin Ale from Wychwood Brewery, really tasty ale.
There's also Sam Adams which IMO you can't usually go wrong with. Avoid their lambics, but their Octoberfest and Blackberry Witbiers are excellent.
I also like Pete's Wicked Ale, but don't buy it that often.
I'm more of a dark beer drinker, which I wouldn't necessarily suggest to a starter, but you might also try Newcastle. For inexpensive but tasty darks, Yuengling's Black and Tan is right on the money.

I'm excited because, allegedly, starting in November, my local place is going to start carrying Founder's. They get some specialities in on occasion, but not their normal line. Red's Rye is one of my favorite beers.
I did buy, and drink, a 4-pack of this lovely:

Four of those had me pretty "relaxed" =P
While Heineken, Becks and Warsteiner may be popular, I for myself mostly like the limited beers from small local brewers in south Germany. Not to say there aren't good beers in other places, but there are a lot of bad beer between some precious delicious and not always easy to find. Needless to say that even ones taste is different.
However from the more popular ones try:
Weltenburger Kloster - Barrock Dunkel
or
Hersbrucker - Dampfsud Dunkel
Yes, at least in south Germany you not buy six-packs but plastic containers with 20 bottles...

Lots of the beer listed here are quite complex. If you are starting out i would suggest you go for something more simple.
I mostly drink ale, porter, stout so i can't offer much advice on the lager. But as the darker side goes, you can't go wrong with a Newcastle Brown Ale, everyone i've asked likes that one. Kilkenny Draught is another i can recommend.
