Default list of wizard game tactics

This is an attempt to list all the wizard tactics used or possibly used in the game. The first message will not be a complete list, as I would admit that I dont know everything. But Hopefully it will encourage other players to submit their favorite or previously unknown wizard tactics so that one day I can formulata a complete list of wizard tactics, and have a guidebook ready for new players. Players feel free to add tactics that I did not list.

most popular tight now, Wiz18/Rog2 Warforged Pale master, but there is also pure wiz20 Drow Elf Crowd control freak too. Personally, I got the Wiz19/Rog1 Sneak attack charming chaos Human. But the list is below:

1 Basic Wizard melee combat: Hold person/Monster, Masters touch, and Great Axe style melee. Great wizard melee trick

    2. Immobilize and cast: Grease, Hold person/monster, most crowd control, or distract with summons or teamates and cast from afar with the monster trapped. Considered a general strategy with several subtactics

    3. Crowd Control Freak: Use disco balls, web, and hold monster on monsters, and buff melee teamates to do the battles for you

    4. Charming chaos player: cause chaos with in the ranks of monsters by charming one of their own, and making them fight each other. At this point let it be known the distinction between crowd control, and Charm chaos.

    5. Hide behind a tank: Shadow a tank player, and let them take the aggro while you cast from afar. Better if you use magic to Buff them as well as damage monsters

6 Use clickies to cast spells instead of using SP to extend your use of spell points for when it matters. Web, grease, Sceptre of Melf Acid Arrow, Haste are awesome as clickies, but not good to spend Spell points on.

    7. Black Ninja style: Hide, and sneak your way through a level, using only crowd control spells, avoid most monsters and kill final boss.

    8. Ambush Rogue style. Start in sneak attack mode, and get back stab bonus and critical hit on first melee attack, then go to town with damage spells or continued Melee.

    9. Throw them a bone and walk off: Cast summon dog or skelly, let them get aggro, and sneak away down the hallway

10 Fox Hunter style: Summon lots of creatures, skeletal minions and hirelings with more summons, and lead a pack of hounds to hunt the foxes for you.

11 The Elemental purist, AKA Wild Mage: Focus on one element type of damage, and max out, full lore and criticals, but only in 1 element. Then Rein Arcane Mass damage and mega pmnonage. Style difference is that you are not sneaking, you are openly attacking as a pure caster

    12. Straight Kiting Hit a monster and walk backwards as you continue to cast. The monster will follow you, but can not hit you and run after you at the same time, thus he gets fewer attacks, while you pick off his hp, and saparate him from the group

    13. Circular Kiting. Same as above, except, Wall of fire, Death aura, and your straffing sideways to get the monster to cook in the wall of fire and death aura.

    14. Grease cliff trick. Funny gag, grease the feet of a monster on an angle near a cliff and he falls off

    15. Vorpal Blade of wounding and Puncturing: race restricted to halfling. One or 2 hits will critically kill the creature by cutting its head off, or lower the constitution to zero, thus killing the creature.

    16. Warforged Self heal tactic. Secret, warforged can heal themselves if they use repair, no UMD required

    17. Part Cleric splash, or High UMD to use heal scrolls. Useful to heal yourself if not warforged

    18. Jump and Cast: Jumping while casting makes it hard to get a lock on you, and makes monster casters spells miss more often. Casting magic missile popular with strategy because it rarely misses even if your blindfolded and falling

    19. High and mighty: Get on top of a ladder, or a tall cliff, and cast from up high against monsters that dont climb ladders, or cant jump. Watch for kobolds that can jump, but most other monsters dont.

    20. Out of range: use metamagic feat to get longer range, walk in, select focus target, walk back with target locked and cast from out of their range of view, or from the other side of a cliff if there is a valley between you.

    21. Behind the Wall Trick 1: Cast splash damage spells or wall of fire so that part of it lands on the other side of a wall you know monsters are behind. let them sizzle and cook, and walk in with fewer monsters to fight.

    22. Behind the wall trick 2: Get a lock on a target from afar, and then get behind a wall or corner that blocks their vision. Military drill tactic: Low crawl up close, and Pie the corner, until you can see one of their sholders, but not their face. Hit them in the sholder while they dont even know whats going on. Also possible to circle strafe or circle kite them as well. Wall of fire, and Death aura good choises too.

    23. The Rush, aggro, and ambush tactic: Run through the whole level with invisibility and haste, and all the monsters will chase you even if they cant see you. Then find a thin open doorway, stand still and turn around, and watch a big gaggle of monsters stumble over each other trying to get to you. Use Web to entangle them all in the doorway, as they bunch up together, then blast them all at once with a mass area of effect spell.

    24. Hit and Run Basic: Melf Acid Arrow, and run away. caste haste you, or slow monster, and leave a trail of grease or web behind you

    25. Hit and Run, and Shin kickers: Hit with melf arrow and slow, jump away, whack with damage when they are not looking, jump away, whack with damage when not looking, jump away. Casting grease trail behind you while running is helpful

    26. Playing Hard to hit: Displacement, concealment, fog, stink cloud, Blur, any kind of makes them miss spells.

    Pale master tricks
Getting into lich of wraith form and casting negative damage spells to heal yourself. Negative energy blast, and death aura, or harm spells

Immortals Feel no pain: Warforged, Lich form, or Wraith form all take away mortal weakness.

haven't seen this question asked or answered in a while, and decided to make a list for reference.

This is a list of arcane spells which will have to be learned from a Wizard trainer, found on scrolls in loot, or purchased from another player. You will not be able to purchase these scrolls from an NPC for scribing into your spellbook.

    Default I'm surprized

I'm surprises, dead silence. Usually when you make a big statement about how the game is played, or how to play the game, usually you get hundred of people objecting because of different points of views, or because different people think different things are better. I'm surprises for as big a statement I made, no comments. I'm ashamed of you!!!

the reason you have met with silence is the numerous mistakes you made. correcting mistakes often tend to lead to name calling and eventually infractions. this is especially more true in so called "guides" written by players with a newer join date and doesnt know the game that well

most popular tight now, Wiz18/Rog2 Warforged Pale master, but there is also pure wiz20 Drow Elf Crowd control freak too. Personally, I got the Wiz19/Rog1 Sneak attack charming chaos Human. But the list is below:
the pure wf wiz is a very popular build, with or without pale master. as to drow 20 cc wiz, in my years of gaming, there arnt that many around. the other popular build is a tukaw build, but usually the more popular is the sorc variant

1 Basic Wizard melee combat: Hold person/Monster, Masters touch, and Great Axe style melee. Great wizard melee trick
if you are depending on hold to immobilise mobs, then masters touch is a waste of time

    2. Immobilize and cast: Grease, Hold person/monster, most crowd control, or distract with summons or teamates and cast from afar with the monster trapped. Considered a general strategy with several subtactics
    grease is a party buff!

seriously, there are a lot more spells that have a greater utility than grease, ie hypnosis. when you are of a level high enough, most of the other spells are seldom used when you get the mass versions

    3. Crowd Control Freak: Use disco balls, web, and hold monster on monsters, and buff melee teamates to do the battles for you
    isnt this like point 2?

    4. Charming chaos player: cause chaos with in the ranks of monsters by charming one of their own, and making them fight each other. At this point let it be known the distinction between crowd control, and Charm chaos.
there is never such a term as charming chaos, its still a form of crowd control

    5. Hide behind a tank: Shadow a tank player, and let them take the aggro while you cast from afar. Better if you use magic to Buff them as well as damage monsters
at the lower levels, this tactic is often empolyed by new players. at the higher levels, casters are typically at the forefront laying destruction or crowd control before the melees get hurt

6 Use clickies to cast spells instead of using SP to extend your use of spell points for when it matters. Web, grease, Sceptre of Melf Acid Arrow, Haste are awesome as clickies, but not good to spend Spell points on.
anything with a DC, ie web would not be useful at the higher levels when cast from a clickie which lacks (a) int mod (b) heighten

haste is awesome from spell points as you can extend it. 30s haste from a clickie is over before you finish the fight

    7. Black Ninja style: Hide, and sneak your way through a level, using only crowd control spells, avoid most monsters and kill final boss.
a wiz has more options than that, namely invisibility

    8. Ambush Rogue style. Start in sneak attack mode, and get back stab bonus and critical hit on first melee attack, then go to town with damage spells or continued Melee.
why not just go to town with a firewall?

    9. Throw them a bone and walk off: Cast summon dog or skelly, let them get aggro, and sneak away down the hallway
    discussed in point 2

10 Fox Hunter style: Summon lots of creatures, skeletal minions and hirelings with more summons, and lead a pack of hounds to hunt the foxes for you.
    why not just charm?

11 The Elemental purist, AKA Wild Mage: Focus on one element type of damage, and max out, full lore and criticals, but only in 1 element. Then Rein Arcane Mass damage and mega pmnonage. Style difference is that you are not sneaking, you are openly attacking as a pure caster
that is not a wild mage. it would do good if you know the definitions of ddo terms

specialising in only 1 element is going to hurt you, especially at the higher levels when the mobs gain more immunities and resistances. typically most players max out the elemental line and then take 1 more, thou may not that the crit enhancements for the 2nd line

    12. Straight Kiting Hit a monster and walk backwards as you continue to cast. The monster will follow you, but can not hit you and run after you at the same time, thus he gets fewer attacks, while you pick off his hp, and saparate him from the group
a good caster will not kite in this manner. if damage spells were to be used, its a fireball or frost lance or any other spells which can kill the mob in 2 hits, preferably 1

    13. Circular Kiting. Same as above, except, Wall of fire, Death aura, and your straffing sideways to get the monster to cook in the wall of fire and death aura.
this is the most popular style

    14. Grease cliff trick. Funny gag, grease the feet of a monster on an angle near a cliff and he falls off
unfortunately in some instances mobs are tethered to a point and moving it out of that radius causes it to rebound back to the starting point with full health

    15. Vorpal Blade of wounding and Puncturing: race restricted to halfling. One or 2 hits will critically kill the creature by cutting its head off, or lower the constitution to zero, thus killing the creature.
if there is such a blade, let me know. also vorpals need to be confirmed. many wizards do not have sufficient confirmation

    16. Warforged Self heal tactic. Secret, warforged can heal themselves if they use repair, no UMD required
    yes

    17. Part Cleric splash, or High UMD to use heal scrolls. Useful to heal yourself if not warforged
    or use pots

    18. Jump and Cast: Jumping while casting makes it hard to get a lock on you, and makes monster casters spells miss more often. Casting magic missile popular with strategy because it rarely misses even if your blindfolded and falling
magic missile doesnt miss as long as you cast at a mob in your front view, within range. the popularity of this style is you get a better vantage point which allow your AOE spells to hit more plus you do not get slowed by the spell's animation

    19. High and mighty: Get on top of a ladder, or a tall cliff, and cast from up high against monsters that dont climb ladders, or cant jump. Watch for kobolds that can jump, but most other monsters dont.
    yes

    20. Out of range: use metamagic feat to get longer range, walk in, select focus target, walk back with target locked and cast from out of their range of view, or from the other side of a cliff if there is a valley between you.
or you can simply just cast at a nearer distance from their backs

    21. Behind the Wall Trick 1: Cast splash damage spells or wall of fire so that part of it lands on the other side of a wall you know monsters are behind. let them sizzle and cook, and walk in with fewer monsters to fight.
it doesnt always work now and is spell dependant

Wall of fire, and Death aura good choises too.
mobs have a unique ability. they instantly know where you are once you get their agro

    23. The Rush, aggro, and ambush tactic: Run through the whole level with invisibility and haste, and all the monsters will chase you even if they cant see you. Then find a thin open doorway, stand still and turn around, and watch a big gaggle of monsters stumble over each other trying to get to you. Use Web to entangle them all in the doorway, as they bunch up together, then blast them all at once with a mass area of effect spell.
    yes

    24. Hit and Run Basic: Melf Acid Arrow, and run away. caste haste you, or slow monster, and leave a trail of grease or web behind you
a total waste of spell points

    25. Hit and Run, and Shin kickers: Hit with melf arrow and slow, jump away, whack with damage when they are not looking, jump away, whack with damage when not looking, jump away. Casting grease trail behind you while running is helpful
    another waste of spell points

    26. Playing Hard to hit: Displacement, concealment, fog, stink cloud, Blur, any kind of makes them miss spells.
the only one thing to note is concealment bonuses do not stack

    Pale master tricks
Getting into lich of wraith form and casting negative damage spells to heal yourself. Negative energy blast, and death aura, or harm spells
    yes

Immortals Feel no pain: Warforged, Lich form, or Wraith form all take away mortal weakness.
    yes

    Nice spell list!

I especially like how it was totally cut and pasted word-for-word from this fellow's post without any attribution to their hard work.
