Default Battle clerics for new players (cleric 18 / ftr 2)

Since I keep posting these builds in other threads, I figure I should just put them in their own thread and save myself the trouble of reposting them. They're basically just my own variants on tihocan's Warpriest, hopefully laid out in a manner which makes them easy for newcomers to follow.

What's a battle cleric? Essentially it's just a cleric who sacrifices spellcasting for melee (or ranged) DPS. With the addition of Radiant Servant in U5, playing a battle cleric became more viable (and fun!) because you can heal & fight at the same time. The trick is finding the right balance in your build so you don't end up gimped at everything. Playing a battle cleric takes some practice: you need to learn when to switch between spellcasting and fighting; when to wade into a fight vs when to back off and support the party; and so forth. Properly built & equipped, they work well as solo-ers and in groups.

The goal of these builds is to be good healers / buffers with decent melee DPS & offensive spellcasting w/out requiring tomes or special gear. I went with cleric 18 so Radiant Servant III can be taken if & when it gets added.

The first build is a caster-focused human:

    A few comments:

    • For skills take max ranks of Concentration and either Balance, Diplomacy, or UMD.
    • Augment Summoning can be swapped for another metamagic (e.g., Spell Penetration), a second Toughness, or to have both THF & PA. It's mostly there to help out while soloing or in small groups and using summons & hirelings as decoys - errr, valiant companions who are in no way expendable.
    • ftr 2 & Imp Crit Slash can be taken as early as lvl 10. I delayed it until after she has lvl 6 spells (Heal & Blade Barrier FTW!) and Radiant Servant II. Also, lvl 13 is when you can take Greater Adaptability STR, which meshes with ftr STR enh for +2 STR. But it's up to you if you want the DPS boost from Imp Crit sooner rather than later.
    • There's room for tweaking enhs. E.g., dropping the Smiting line or Wand Mastery enhs to take Spell Pen enhs instead if you like using spells such as Greater Command or Destruction which have Spell Resistance checks. I also would've liked to squeeze in human Versatility or more Imp Recovery, but it's a tough call as to what to drop.
    • I would probably swap THF for PA after you get to cleric 7 (lvl 4 spells). Hopefully Divine Power + Divine Favor + Recitation + (Mass) Aid (or Inspire Courage or Greater Heroism) means you'll be able to leave PA switched on all the time.

Coming up: a melee-focused dwarf using greataxes.

Next up is a STR-based dwarf battle cleric. Compared to the human version, she sacrifices metamagic feats for the THF feat chain - essentially trading spellcasting for extra melee DPS w/greataxes. To be honest, I prefer caster-focused battle clerics like my first build - I don't think the extra DPS is worth the sacrifice in spellcasting - but I present it for those who might prefer a more melee-oriented BC. It would also serve as a reasonable template for a half-orc BC.

Alternatively, you could split the difference between this build and my first one: follow the class & feat progression from the human version (i.e., drop Augment Summoning & THF chain & stick w/metamagics); but put lvl-ups into STR and use the enhs from this build. So you would still be +4 to-hit & dmg w/greataxes over the first build, but your spellcasting wouldn't suffer as much, though your glancing blows go way down.

You could also take a wizard splash for one more metamagic feat; getting to use arcane wands would be a nice bonus. But you'd be sacrificing RS III unless you LR / GR +1 to cleric 18.

28-pt TWF elf w/scimitars: solid DPS, good heals & buffs, weak-ish offensive casting but can still lay down a Blade Barrier. It requires a +1 DEX tome before lvl 9 for ITWF & GTWF, but hopefully anyone can save up enough plat by then to buy one off the Auction House. Worst case scenario, you take Quicken at lvl 9 and delay ITWF to lvl 12. I got lazy and only listed the enhs at lvl 20; but you can presume they'll look pretty similar to the dwarf version posted earlier.

    32-pt build: put extra pts into CON (14) or WIS (16). EDIT: or start 18 / 16 / 12 / 8 / 12 / 8 if you want max STR.
    Skill: max Concentration.
Alignment: since this build won't have UMD, I went LG to use Lawful-aligned equipment & Pure Good weapons. CG is an option too, as are the neutral alignments if you want to be able to use Evil-tainted items without incurring a negative level and be immune to Unholy dmg.
Feats: Extend Spell can be swapped at higher lvls for a different metamagic: e.g., Empower, Maximize. You can also swap PA for another metamagic: melee DPS vs better spellcasting, it's your call.

best way to play a battle cleric.

Log in, Reroll your toon to a FvS if you want to fight, or a Cleric if you want to heal.

battle clerics fail 9 times out of 10. (Seen from experiance... very VERY few know how to actually do a real "Battle cleric")

Stats for caster cleric (28 point, Human):
    Strength 14
    Dexterity 8
    Constitution 14
    Intelligence 8
    Wisdom 18
    Charisma 8
All levelup points into WIS. Max WIS for casting but can still do some melee.

Stats for melee cleric (28 point, Human):
    Strength 16 (or 15)
    Dexterity 8
    Constitution 14
    Intelligence 8
    Wisdom 14
    Charisma 14 (or 15)
All levelup points into STR. Some CHA is for Divine Might. Enough WIS to cast spells (with items, tomes, enhanc). With CHA 15 and +3 CHA tome (i know not common) you can get DM3. Full melee with buffs/heals and lots of Turn charges for RS cures/regen and DMs. In general, you build melee oriented Cleric almost like you'd build a Paladin. Same stats, but cleric takes less combat feats and more meta-magic feats.

Pick one "profession", melee or magic, or you'll suck in both.

    Wow, thanks, I didn't know I was a 10.

I have a TWF (dual dwarven axes) Dwarven Battlecleric that's a blast to play, though battleclerics don't really begin to shine until at least midlevel (divine power), and I wouldn't recommend one until you get 32 point build.

i agree that many do not know how to play this right. But if you do know, and if you are willing to learn it, then battle cleric is better then a healer in party. ( I am a battle cleric patriot though xD)

OP: i really enjoyd looking over your builds, i was considering making some f2p newbie bcleric builds for a friend of mine. Was abit hard for me, but as i look at your builds, they seem pretty much like a battle cleric should be

    good job

If you're a battlecleric in a group with a fvs, the fvs has 2-3x the sp you do, but YOU'RE expected to be the main healer because you have the cleric icon. The fvs will let you die when you're out of sp or bursts or when everything is on timer but YOU'RE the failure according to the group, not them. You can drink pots to heal people but if anyone dies it's your fault, even if they were around the corner from you, then because you're a battlecleric you should reroll.

So why aren't people saying "melee fvs is a failure, reroll as a healer" hmm? Because fvs isn't expected to be a nanny. Maybe clerics don't have to be nannies, just like fvs don't have to be nannies.

I have one battlecleric and one nuker cleric. They can both heal, the nuker just has more sp for bad groups to sponge off. My bard can also heal with mass cures and with scrolls (and just missing scroll for hammer of life muahaha).

The hard part of being a battlecleric is the melee part. Managing threat, knowing when to back off.

Healing is in the brain, not the build.

clerics can hit 600 dps on trash. too bad itll be way lower on bosses.
as fvs your stuck to 2h greatswords. which are the worsed kind of weapons weapons to deal dmg with.
    the problem is feats.

    you need:
    two weapon fighting
    improved two weapon fighting
    greater two weapon fighting
    power attack
    stunning fist
improved crit(khopesh or handwraps), khopesh also needs the prof.
    toughness
    maximize
    empower
    empower healing
    heighten
    quicken
perhaps weapon fitnesse to raise to hit.

an fighter1, monk2, human splash could hit that. but its the worsed race to dps with.
    helf adds 3d6 sa
    halfling adds +8 sa.
yes wf. and horc got power attack enhancements, but they need theyre to hit as high as posible.

    itll probally be something like:
lets asume 1 fighter, 2 monk, 17 cleric.

    +25 dmg. strength( 16 base + 5 level + 8 bloodrage + 2 rage + 4 blades + 7 enhancements + 1 exceptional + 2 yugo +4 tome + 2 shrine + 4 madstone + 6 titan grip)
    +6 dmg. divine might 3:
    +4 dmg: blade transformation
    +8 dmg power attack:
    +8 tharnes sneak attack

    silver handwraps"
    +10.5 greater bane
    +7 holy
    +7 (2d6 cold added).

    tod rings:
+7 (2d6 holy burst( adds 2d6 on an crit))
+7 (2d6 elemental burst. same, adds another 2d6 on an crit).

    event trinkiet for
    35 dmg on an crit.(10d6)

    banishing robe
    +100 on an crit

    event gloves
+2.5 (1d4 spikes dmg on every hit).

3.5 base dmg(1d6 standard might become 1d10 with tod set on, but will probably already have problems slotting in).

its around 93 bare minimal on average every hit.
bab 20 unarmed fighting = 204 attacks per min.

    204 * 93 / 60 = 316 dps. now adds stunning for +50% dmg = 474.
can get it WAY higher if id really bothered to get an cualculator. but not in the mood.

Can someone please fix this so a noob can try it out......this looks just like what I am after but your 'laziness' makes it impossible for me to do cos I have no idea when to do what enhancement

I tweaked the base stats and the feats a bit; in particular I added a few more metamagics and backloaded the DPS a bit more. But the basic premise is the same: TWF DPS, good heals, buffs, and also light dmg (mostly for Divine Punishment vs bosses).

I don't usually show a lvl-by-lvl breakout of enhs; partly because it's harder to read that way and partly because I expect people to tweak them a lot in order to fit their gear etc. Instead I show them at common break points, usually when the PrE tiers become available, so you have some idea what you should be building towards.

    Default What about skills?

1)And what about skills? Should it be Balance and Concentration? Is UMD needed for Clerics?
2)Why elf? It has less con what means less HP. Can you please show the same build for Human?
    Thanks..)

I have a Dwarven 18cleric/2 fighter. Its a solid build my favorite aspect about it is that if you know how you are more then capable of fighting and healing. Granted your not going to out DPS a FB barb or a Kensai Fighter but you can heal yourself a whole lot better then they could.

I agree with all the post that Battlecleric is not a good choice for a new player. If considering a battlecleric, you should cap a healbot first to learn the mechanics/roles of the class.

Also, this entire arguement depends on what your definition of 'Battlecleric' is. Unfortunately, there is not a commonly accepted definition. To me, a Battlecleric is any build that is not your typical nannybot and can heal/melee/offensive cast, or any combination of these.

Personally, my 'Battlecleric' is fully spec'd to heal and offensive cast. I do have adequate hp/fort/AC/DR to stand in with the melee and swing a vorpal/smiter/banisher (and proc my torc & conc opp ).

IMHO, a nannybot build is a waste of one of the most powerful classes in the game.

i'm in the club of pure 20 battleclerics. 2/monk is a solid choice. however if i were to make a splash battlecleric, i'd go 2/pally.

i also disagree that battleclerics are for vets only. theyre not hard to play and they are much more enjoyable than a healbot.
