Just got back from doing a retirement then a navy bday ceremony as Captain of the Honor Guard. They also threw a party with a live band, started as I was heading home. Working nights, so needed a few hours of sleep. Food looked great though.

For those of you at sea, be safe.

I guess I've been out long enough for pretty much all the hate and discontent to have had evaporated. I'm glad I did my six. It was a very good experience for having a relative measure of how crappy life can be. No one in civilian life can really get away with what can be gotten away with in the military...and it is hard to find a work schedule like that which pays so poorly. Oh, and the sea stories....many things that would not be considered "civil and within the forum guidelines" um...happened.

Wow, I would have said you sounded like you needed to get out before 6, but as a nuke, that was the required commitment (I know, I took the NFQT). Sorry to hear that you had a bad time of it. It was the best 6 years of my life, and I have kicked myself every day for getting out in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very glad that I did those six years. I just wasn't terribly happy about it at the time. Very few nukes that I knew were happy about it...the retention numbers spoke to that (and probably still do). It was and probably still is very difficult to get nukes to stay more than the minimum. I could see with some topsider ratings that the whole experience might have had been more enjoyable. (We had cooks that got NAMs for making a good cakes whereas if watchstander action in the plant averted...something...we were just doing our jobs.) My first year of sea duty was spent in locked-train shift work on 10-12 hr days with about 1 day off per month. Then, of course, we were shortmanned at sea so we did 5/10 watch rotations with full maintenance/work schedules....we stayed pretty frakking busy. 3-4 hrs of sleep being the norm. (I'm not crying about any of that, just demonstrating why some nukes might be considered disgruntled...I volunteered and I stood by my contract...I'm also not comparing standing EO in EOS to being in combat.)

The worst misconception I had about civilian industry after I got out was that I actually expected that every industry followed "verbatim compliance" with regards to procedures and maintenance schedules as well as having mandatory continuous trainings to maintain proficiency.

    Boy was I ever wrong.

One of the ships my father served on during the Korean War.

This is Doris Day welcoming home a ship of heroes. These two heroes were a bit luckier than most however

God Bless the warriors of the waterways! Thank you all for your dedication and service to this great but sometimes unappreciative land.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY US NAVY!
