Does subtle backstabbing work with ranged?

i know the enhancment description says "melee", but we all know those texts aren't always correct

I doubt it but I only doubt it because of some anecdotal observations.

When soloing Weaon Shipment, I usually wait until the Titan has taken the Pit Fiend down to half before I jump in and kick his butt. But while I'm waiting, I stand within sneak attack range and toss a greensteel returning throwing dagger at him. It doesn't take many throws to pull aggro.

However, when I finally jump in and melee him, I rarely pull aggro even though I'm doing a ton more damage.
