Question half elf with barb dilettante is -2 with greataxe?

According to the feat, I count as a level 1 barbarian for item use purposes. And that means I should be able to use greataxe with no penalty. Yes?

I think fighter is the one that can use the axe without a penalty.

The Barbarian Dill Feat would come into play if you wanted to equip an item that specified Barbarian-Only in the description (and I can't think of any - but could be wrong), and does not grant any other abilities or proficiency of being a Barb beyond the 1 DR. As was said by lethargos, you'd want the Fighter Dill feat that grants proficiency in all martial weapons - making it one of the better of the Dill feats, imho.

As a whole, I think the Dilettante feats are worded poorly and open to a lot of confusion. Also, many of them flat-out suck - and would actually hurt the vast majority of builds that might take them.

There aren't any. And the DR 1/- given by the barbarian dilettante is on the protector gloves from Korthos, or the berserker bracers from STK. This makes the barbarian dilettante useless, even at level 1.

The only class-required items that come to mind are the Mad Lute (requires Bard) and the longsword from Black Anvil Mines (paladin). And neither of these are relevant for a powergamer at endgame.

The nerfing will continue until morale improves!

Also the Adherent's Pendant (Epic as well) from the desert.

But that's just a picky detail as none of these are reason to use the delitante feat. Until they add delitante enhancements to go with the feats, they are an extremely niche build use at best.

Adherent's Pendant can be UMDed. Mad Lute cannot.

But yeah, if you wanna use a dilettante that gives you greataxe prof, go fighter.

I was really excited when I heard about half elves coming with U7, I placed all my current Tr plans for 4 characters on hold until I got a glance at them. The dilettante feats as described before the lama preview just sounded exceptional.

Then I got to see the lam preview.

My thoughts on the subject would be that if the race is released now as is, with the dilettante feats so far incomplete (with further expansion of the ability through enhancements to be released at some unknown future date), it may result in a feeling of dissipointment from everyone who was so eager for a new non dps focused race to build utility and flavor based concepts around.

I really believe the race may end up with the kind of stigma that will have it be considered lackluster at best. Better to delay the release of the race until it has been fully fleshed out, that might prevent a whole lot of frustration for a bunch of people, especially considering that the race is a p2p race.

As the feat is a Half-Elf bonus feat, and doesn't detract from the regular feats you can pick, none of them can actually hurt any build that takes them. Now if it's changed to a regular feat, then no one will ever take them, save maybe Pure Bard THF Warchanters (taking the Fighter one). I agree that the only one I've seen worth taking is the Fighter bonus feat.

Yeah, the fighter one is a standout, since you can str-base a melee that wouldn't normally have blanket martial prof, like a rogue. Really would rule for that, since you could use all sort of weapons then. The others all add things, but they're either underwhelming (the dex-based ones) or really useful, but require too much investment in a dump stat (the caster based ones, which dangle wand/scroll use just out of reach).

I don't really think they're finished, but I like where they're going with it, and with a bit more polish I think the half-elf could be excellent.

It does in effect indeed cost you a feat, as you otherwise could simply go Human and get the human bonus feat, instead of the Dilettante ability.

That really isn't the same thing, you know.

As the only bigger difference between Human and Halfelf is currently dilettante vs. bonus feat, i think that that is a good benchmark to compare racial abilities against.

If Humans didn't get a bonus feat, and Half-Elves didn't get a Dilettante feat, which one would come out on top in a comparison between the two?

There are also all those wiz/sorc/bard only wands.

I also remember a wizard/sorc only robe from the desert that I thought only came out of Thurnok the Mad's chest. However it is not on the definitive list. Sure it was called Robe of the Magi or something, had to do with fire spells.

This may be a hint that class related items are going to become more frequent.
