Each Tier of Kensai will give you :
- +1 Combat DCs (Such as Trip)
- +1 Bluff, Diplo, Intim
- +1 Reflex v. Magical effects
- +1 Action Boost (Seems to count for Kensai Surge, Haste/Attack Boost, Human Adaptability, etc.)
No additional to-hit, or damage, comes directly from the PrE itself.
Kensai does, however, allow access to the Signature Weapon lines. You can only have one at a time.
Tier 1 is
- +1 To-Hit, +2 Damage
- +2 Seeker to-hit, +4 Seeker damage.
- Improved Glancing Blows.
Tier 2 is the same thing. It totals up to be :
- +2 To-Hit, +4 Damage
- +4 Seeker to-hit, +8 Seeker damage.
Further Improved Glancing Blows.
Tier 3 is special
It gives you a +1 to your Critical Range on a weapon. A lot of new time players confuse this with multiplier – it is not.
So, say you’re a Greatsword Kensai for some reason. Your normal crit range is 19-20. Improved Critical would give you 17-20. So, Tier 3 of Signature Weapon : Greatsword would allow you a Crit range of 16-20 on any randomly generated greatsword. The ESoS would be 18-20 base, 15-20 with Improved Critical, and 14-20 with Kensai Signature Weapon III. This is also the same crit range that can be accomplished by using any randomly generated Falchion, 14-20.
Coupled with the +4 Seeker to-hit of the other two tier of the Signature Weapon Line, and the base minimum three tiers of Fighter Critical Accuracy 3 (+6 to confirm), you’re almost guaranteed that every critical threat is confirmed, ensuring that with the ESoS or with a Falchion that you can have about 35% of your hits be critical, and will deal an extra 8 pre-multiplier damage in comparison to your normal hits.
Combined with the Capstone’s newly-changed doublestrike, and plenty of glancing blows, it is not uncommon to see 5 critical hits in a row on non-fortified mobs.
Also suggested would be Fighter Falchion Specialization, as it would be an extra +2 to every hit, doublestrike, glancing blow, critical, etc.
I have attached a video to show basically where a THF Falchion Kensai stands. Also, I noticed that the Greatsword’s Crit range on the Inventory page is wrong : I have no idea why. Maybe the Signature Weapon is applying to it improperly; I don’t actually use Greatswords, so I’m not sure.
Used : Clean Falchion/Greatswords from the Vendor in Harbor, +1 Paralyzing Longsword of Pure Good. (random non-2-hander in my inventory)
