Default Blur and Displacement = ugly

My suggestion is to change the visual effect of blur and displacement. Currently it creates a white air effect covering your avatar which is not how those spells operate in D&D. I have made some quick mock-ups in Photoshop to illustrate how I would imagine the buff effects looking in DDO...

    Blur

    Displacement

All you need to do is go on a Tink & company "Drunken Raid Night" by the time we reach VOD...pretty much everyone looks "displaced" as in your picture!

Yuck, honestly I think that's more ugly than the way the spells are now. Having to see that would give me a constant headache.

and I'll follow that up with a mfugly, to the OP
    1. It would cause alot more lag
    2. It would confuse players greatly
    3. It would be hard to implement
    4. (what they said before) Causes major headaches

The spells are designed to replicate the effect so that you know more or less what it's supposed to be, without having to use too much processing on actually blurring or displacing the model...

An ally's appearance becomes extremely blurred, giving enemies a 50% miss chance when attacking.
I would translate this to: When an enemy looks at you, it can't see you clearly as if its vision was extremely blurred, giving it a 50% miss chance when attacking.

If this were the exact case, characters wouldn't need any visual effects at all, unless they were our enemies. In which case, I'm happy with what we have now.

To those who think this is a good idea, please look up Simulation Sickness and note that 33% of the world population suffers from it. Also note that some of those play DDO.

It wont make you sick, I know the pictures are a little..disorienting, but in game would look much more slick. And wouldnt cause lag. Its just an effect, and their are plenty in DDO.

This is supposed to be Dungeons and Dragons and if my mage casts displacement I want to be displaced darn it!

Theres nothing funny about it! When I cast displacement why should I have a whirling mass of goo around my body? It has nothing to even do with the spell!! and blur? it's supposed to blur you not turn you into an air elemental.

    Copied from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_sickness

    Simulation sickness

Simulation sickness, or simulator sickness, is a condition where a person exhibits symptoms similar to motion sickness caused by playing computer/simulation/video games.[1]

The most common theory for the cause of simulation sickness is that the illusion of motion created by the virtual world, combined with the absence of motion detected by the inner ear, causes the area postrema in the human brain to infer that one is hallucinating and further conclude that the hallucination is due to poison ingestion. The brain responds by inducing nausea and mass vomiting, to clear the supposed toxin.[8] According to this theory, simulation sickness is just another form of motion sickness.

The symptoms are often described as quite similar to that of motion sickness. Some can range from headache, drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, vomiting and sweating. Research done at the University of Minnesota had students play Halo for less than an hour, and found that up to 50 percent felt sick afterwards.

Motion sickness due to virtual reality is very similar to simulation sickness and motion sickness due to films. In virtual reality, however, the effect is made more acute as all external reference points are blocked from vision, the simulated images are 3-dimensional and in some cases stereo sound that may also give a sense of motion. The world's most advanced simulator, the NADS-1, located at the National Advanced Driving Simulator is capable of accurately stimulating the vestibular system with a 360 degree horizontal field of view and 16 degree of freedom motion base. Studies have shown that exposure to rotational motions in a virtual environement can cause significant increases in nausea and other symptoms of motion sickness.

Maybe you don't suffer from Simulator Sickness so you wouldn't know but DDO is already nauseating enough. This would probably be the last straw if it were implemented.

    P.S. Please change Camo/Mass Camo!

I hope your'e not suggesting we limit the realism or graphics of video games because some people get sick.
I remember when people started having seizures from games and they put warning labels in the instruction manual, they did'nt dumb down the graphics to look like atari 2600.

As technology increases we are going to see more realism in video games, new effects and physical simulation. I think it's very exciting, but to limit progress due to a few unfortunates is a very destructive view.. imo

The visuals on buffs and the floating text is obviously not meant to be in-character.
On PnP to know what spells are present you had to do a spellcraft check.

An idea would be to just show a visual effect when the foe or toon is selected or given focus.
For example, if you swing and miss you'll see the shaman blurry for a moment.
Translucent as your swing misses for displacement, reddy when raging, etc.
Thus more appropiate cues with less visual pollution, not that it's a big deal of course, just an idea.

I think that's what he is suggesting, and I agree. The game should be as accessible as possible for those with simulator sickness and color-blindness.

Heck, even some members of the Turbine team have had issues with simulator sickness- Tolero, IIRC...
