    Default There's a simple answer

There are certain classes that have been 'traditionally' one or the other through out the fanstasy realm, ie. look through 'most' (and I use that term very loosly) books, games, movies, etc. and you will find the 'healer' class being female. The brawny, fighter classes are usually male, and the other classes are a mix of either. Spellcasters can be either, though wizards are generally male in fantasy as female spellcasters are most often sorceresses.

Then there's the female butt thing....thats got merit.

And the WF female voice in DDO is just hilarious...

Is it a control issue? Might be just coincidence but I find most of these guys playing females are a bit pushy and rude at times.

Or maybe I just put to much thought behind a character as imo its a digital imprint of yourself in a way, since you can tell alot about a person due to his playstyle and what kind of character they play.

So you guys playing females can you give me good reasons of why you play a female toon?[/QUOTE]

Maybe its cause it enables them to do something that they secretly want to do but would get hammered for it in their societies? They want to explore cross dressing and get in touch with their feminine side lmao!!! But are too scared to do it in rl so they can get away with it in virtual reality?

I play male characters because my brother gives me grief if I make a female one.

If there is anything more comical than a 6.5 ft 300 pound + guy in a little black dress, hand bag and heels its a 6.5ft 300+ pound guy in little black dress, hand bag and heels beating the **** out of 5 guys who thought it would be a good idea to start a fight with the 300+ pound guy rippling with muscles cause hes wearing a dress. I laughed till there where tears in my eyes. Never mess with an islander in a dress they are the most vicious of the lot.

To make matters worse these *******/idiots went to press charges on the guy but a lot of witnesses stepped forward and had video footage showing 5 guys attacking 1 guy in a dress and having their @$$es handed to them. lmao 5 on 1 they start it, get beaten up then go crying to the police and the courts pathetic.

I didn't realize it was a problem. Still don't. A dude doesn't swing an axe harder than a chick in DDO so why should I care either way?

That is not the only incident ive seen. haha ive even seen my share of women in dress smacking the **** out of guys. Funniest one was this guy grabbed this chicks butt and she turned around and dropped him, flat on his ass and prob knocked a tooth out.

    Wow. Just wow.

Your first point is just a silly generalization, due in part to small sample size / exposure, and also to the fact that you obviously have issues with guys who play females, so you're more apt to notice it. There are lots of rude and pushy people in DDO, of all races and genders. Thankfully they are vastly outnumbered by reasonable people.

Secondly, I think many in this thread (myself included) do NOT view characters as digital imprints of themselves. If they did, I would worry much more about the warforged.

I have 10 toons, 8 of them female. I don't see the need to justify any of them to you. It's a game. Pardon the play on my screen name, but it's JUST A GAME. Besides, many have given plenty of reasons in this thread.

As to your last point, I think you may be the one with issues. We play sentinent constructs, dwarves, elves, halflings, and more. We play the roles of great warriors, assassins, spell-casting magicians, and priests that raise the dead. Yet, in light of all that, the fact that some of us sometimes play females is... somehow weird to you. I submit that you, sir, are the one with the problem.

To paraphrase your question, can you give us just one good reason why, in a game such as this, where people play all sorts of non-realistic fantasy characters, that playing a female is somehow indicative of something wrong?

My main (now) is a female, her name is a nod to my wife, who plays PnP with me and likes "the Guild". I would posit that those who automatically assume some sort of fetish/sexuality/trans-gender issue are individuals that have quite a bit of maturing to do still, and would benefit greatly from some introspection and maybe even analytical therapy.

Well I don't do it myself cause I'm a hardened Roleplayer and a male.

When I make a character, I'm acting out my own personality traits in the game coupled with some different traits depending on my class and race.

For example, on my elf cleric I tend to be a little more arrogant than usual but general nice and helpful unless I'm ****ed off. On my Warforged Wizard I tend to be methodical, tactical, and I plan ahead for things instead of jumping into random decisions.

However, DDO basically lost all of its roleplaying capabilities due to weak rules and systems (ie. Alignment, adding in a proper alignment and choices system would give DDO at least 30% of the roleplaying capability back). Men are more interested in making a cool looking character than making an avatar of themselves. Frankly, the female elves look cooler than the male elves, female humans look better in robes, but you'll never see males playing a female dwarf or something because it looks funny in everything :P

    Wink

Flip a coin. Heads = female (queen's head, yes I'm UK), tails = male. Except dwarves, I like to go female cos there are precious few female dwarves around and that's not fair.

I think of them (and refer to them) as 'him' or 'her', not 'me'. It's just a game. Maybe this shows I have a problem with commitment lol.

With close on 20 toons they're not far off half and half.

And I like to play halflings cos I'm not keen on heights

It all depends on the race... apparently you didn't get the memo, but for DDO here are the rules:

Half-Orc: Male. Do you really need an explanation?

Drow: Female. Because the females are hot and the males are just Vampire LeStat wanna bes.

Human: Male. Because if you want to play a female toon, you'll choose one of the races that actually looks good as a female.

Dwarf: Male. Same reasons as half-Orc and Human.

Elf: Female. Because a male elf is at least as effeminate as any other race's female, so might as well be female.

Robot ..COUGH ... er War Forged: Male. For the opposite reason as the Elf. The WF are like WWF wrestlers, even the females look male, so might as well be male.

Halfling: Female... because who would want to play a male with such a tiny...

You play what fits the flavor of your build.

    Simple as that.

I think there's two different takes on how people view their avatars.

The first camp treats their avatar as a personal extention of themselves within a virtual environment, and almost always chooses their character gender to match their real life one. Usually these folks will say things like, "I would feel weird playing a girl" or "I can't roleplay a girl if I'm a real life guy".

The other camp doesn't feel the same level of personal involvement to their character, and views it more as a vehicle through which to they can explore the game rather than a persona in its own right. It's just a tool. These folks will usually say something like, "I don't care about looks, I just hit random on appearance and go" or "I just choose whatever model whose looks I can stand".

My hubby is definitely the second category and plays males and female interchangeably without regard. I have also played males and females, but usually I make characters based on a theme so I have a toe in the first group.

As long as you are not roleplaying the gender of the character changes only one thing: it's visuals. And as a male player i just thing that female chars look better

I have no idea, but it is interesting... it's mostly interesting seeing how many people in this thread find guys running a girl character to be distasteful, threatening or even just "odd" in some way... I admit there was a time when I would have thought it odd too (but not distasteful or threatening), it's just been 10 or 15 years since that time.

But yea Yazston as you said it really doesn't matter I just was intrested in hearing some good civilized answers without all the namecalling. This is what happens when you are bored and waiting to play a Half Orc....
Your OP said you noticed a corrolation with men who play female characters as pushy and rude and suggested they have control issues. I didn't name call any more than you did, I just speculated based on experience, as you did. So if I was name calling, so were you in the OP.
