Default Best Half Orc Barbarian Weapon?

Spyderwolf asked me to crunch some numbers in order to figure out what the best DPS weapon style for half orcs will be in U7. Here are the results:

    • Epic Sword of Shadows, Epic Marilith Chain, and Litany of the Dead deals the best DPS versus Devil raid bosses on normal.
    • Epic Sword of Shadows, Epic Marilith Chain, and Litany of the Dead deals the best DPS versus Queen Lailat on epic.
    • Epic Sword of Shadows, Red Dragonscale Robe, and Bloodstone is tied with Epic Sword of Shadows, Epic Marilith Chain, and Litany of the Dead for best DPS against Epic Named monsters.
    • Mineral II Heavy Picks with Red Dragonscale Robe and Bloodstone deals the best DPS versus Epic trash monsters.

I recommend you use the same source for your attack speeds. Different sources will have different experimental results simply because of different setups (different computers, network speeds, testing methods, etc.). For example, my data gives 86 swings per minute for THF base, Monkey_Archer's data gives 88 swings per minute for THF base, cforce's data (which is used in Absolute-Omniscience's DPS calc) gives 89 swings per minute, and your own data gives 83 swings per minute. It's not particularly important which one you pick, since what's important is the relative DPS of different setups, but it's important that you use the same source so that there won't be errors due to using different setups for testing the attack speeds.

I completely agree. However, cforce's attack speed chart was last updated when the level cap was 16, making it too outdated for use. Also, Monkey_Archer uses calculated, rather than experimental, data to determine the attacks per minute of THF so I used my own experimental data.

If there is a level 20 half-orc with BAB +20 on Lamania who is willing to supply me with attack speed data for THF or TWF (or both) please let me know so I can post verifiable data!

    *continues to crunch numbers*

    EDIT:
    Number crunching now complete.

Actually, he updated them for me in U2, aka the latest update where attackspeed was changed. (Well, we'll need new ones for half orc now).

However, if you refer to the OLD thread, it hasn't been updated to my knowledge.

I didn't ask why he specified Acid/Pure Good Burst instead of Holy/Acid Burst, but I suspect it was to deal better damage to neutral creatures on Epic difficulty.

The numbers have been crunched. It looks like TWF is still the best trash-killer (by far!) but eSOS is the way to go against named monsters and raid bosses.

Looks pretty good just one thing.

as far as I know viscious damage is no longer a 100% proc on glancing blows. As such it should also be multiplied by your .2%. I haven't personally tested this in lammania but have heard it was changed along with all other things that are proccing 100% on GB like pally capstone dmg.

    - Didn’t change this. They should be considered special effects, the 100% proc rate is considered a bug.
On Llamaland, the vicious damage still has a 100% proc rate on glancing blows. I hope they decide that this "bug" is actually a "game feature" and keep it the way it has been functioning for more than a year.

Gee, I didn't need to "crunch numbers" to know that Epic Sword of Shadows is still the absolute best weapon in the game. I just looked at it again! It's awesomeness was enough to reassure me.

Let us not forget that epic trash (capable of being disabled and made 100% vulnerable to critical hits + sneak attacks) isn't where barbarians are NEEDED. It's against the bosses. This makes heavy picks... you guessed it!

    Irrelevant.

I'm sorry, I just had to critique the lack of thought put into this equipment setup:

    - Kyosho's Ring should have +2 Exceptional Constitution. If you're seriously telling me that you'd rather give up the bonus hit points on a Half-Orc (lower even than Humans) when you already have a total healing amplification range of 130-164% with buffs, you need to go back to Warrior 101.

    - Greater Might of the Abishai and Litany of the Dead - Ability Bonus don't stack! In effect, you are giving up the Epic Helm of the Red Dragon (+7 STR, Magma Surge Guard, Yellow Augment: Fear/Poison/Disease Immunity), and the Madstone Boots (~15% chance for 2 min stacking +2 STR and +2 CON on being hit) for an additional +2 Profane bonus to STR (No, it doesn't say CON on the greater set description). Oh, and that bonus is also lower than the Hezrou cookie that can be carried in bulks of 100 when wished. The only item that even looks interesting is Epic Envenomed Cloak, and only because of the +7 CON, +5 resists, and Green Augment slot. Still, it has the misfortune to compete with Green Steel in certain situations. Unless the epic versions of those other two items are totally amazing, I'd dump them in a second.

How does a lit II falchion compare? I know that the crit range for it effectively brings it up past greataxe and greatsword with enough damage bonus. (Which isn't a problem on a halforc OR a barbarian)

If you need the extra +20 hp from Kyosho's ring to survive, then you would have gotten greater benefit from an extra +20% on your last Heal. Damage mitigation (in the form of healing amplification) is far more important at high HP levels than an extra 20 hit points.

If you looked at my strength list, it would be obvious to you that the Litany of the Dead bonus to strength was not included. Magma surge is not WAI, and guards are only of minimal use in epic. The +7 strength from the helmet would give me an odd strength score and would not increase my DPS. Fear immunity is granted by Greater Heroism. You can buy potions of Remove Disease. Poison immunity is available on potions that last 7 minutes each as well. Hezrou cookies are a limited resource and are best saved for speed runs. If you actually had a pair of Madstone Boots, you'd know they give +2str/+4con.

This thread is not an accessory debate. If you really want to discuss barbarian equipment, load your barbarian onto Llamania. I promise you that I can make you look like you look like you started playing only last January. Any quest, any raid, any time.

    Newb question for you, 'Surgeon:
With the fix, is there any benefit to using Titan's Grip in there,
or does it not stack with the bonuses already listed?

    .
    1) How does healing me for 300 more than I have health vs healing me for 100 more than I have health help keep me alive again better than having more HP?
    2) Damage mitigation and healing amp are not even close to the same thing
    3) If half orc doesnt need any more hp why did you burn the thranes spot for more hp?

Qualitatively, it does less damage than eSOS against targets vulnerable to critical hits, a little more than a Mineral II versus Devil raid bosses on normal. Queen Lailat is immune to lightning and it doesn't bypass her DR so it's pretty useless against her. It is superior to Mineral II against Velah, and most epic monsters. It would be very difficult for me to calculate what the average DPS on a Lightning II weapon is, since it has such a low proc chance and does such a high amount of damage. However, if a Dev were to comment on exactly what the proc rate and average damage were...

I haven't tested the new version of Titan's Grip on Llamania, but if it is working as intended (no more speed debuff) then it will give a short-term DPS increase. It should stack with everything I have listed here.

The only issues with using it are that it takes time to swap equipment, hit the clicky, and swap back so you'll never want to do it mid-combat. Also, when you are raging you will be unable to use the clicky.

I didn't include the Titan's Grip gloves in my calculations because it's not a sustainable source of DPS.

Overhealing doesn't do anyone any good. But being able to have a heal scroll hit you for 400+ helps things go a lot smoother.

If you have aggro, Tharnes isn't going to do anything for you but the extra HP and guard will help. If you don't have aggro, use Tharne's. And there's no such thing as too many hit points... the only issue is when you have to sacrifice other, more valuable things to get the extra HP. I suppose I could have calculated an extra block for each situation and weapon based one whether or not you're getting sneak attack but did not think it necessary for this exercise.

Once I update my barbarian thread I would gladly welcome any questions, comments, or feedback on my build and setup. This thread really isn't the place. I was given a set of equipment to calculate DPS estimates for, which is exactly what I did. I didn't question the equipment, I just did the math. If you want to challenge Spyderwolf on his gear, feel free (and expect a snarky reply). This was a favor to him but I decided to make the results public so that other people might learn a thing or two.

If there is a level 20 half-orc with BAB +20 on Lamania who is willing to supply me with attack speed data for THF or TWF (or both) please let me know so I can post verifiable data!
Yes, but this means that it introduces a source of error by relying on data from different sources for different parts of the comparison.

For example, using my data, THF would have a swings per minute of 100.3, while TWF would have a swings per minute of 102.0, a difference of around 1.7%. Using Monkey_Archer's data, the two are identical, for a difference of 0%. But under your formulation, with one at 99 swings per minute and the other at 106, the difference is around 7% between the two styles. It's unknown if this difference in the relative speeds is due to taking data from different sources or due to an actual difference between the styles.

Fortunately however it looks like the category where TWF is superior isn't even close so this shouldn't affect the relative rankings.

Anyway, minor nit: I think glancing blows actually have a proc rate of 26% for a maxed half-orc barbarian. The numbers are from:

9% THF, ITHF, GTHF (3% each)
    6% FB 1, FB 2, FB 3 (2% each)
6% half-orc thing (2% each) (too lazy to look up the name)
    5% barbarian might (5%)

Madfloyd likely forgot about the FB bonus or something, or it doesn't stack with the half-orc thing or something, when he said it's only 20%.

I recognize that my attack speed data may contain slight inaccuracies, but it's the best data I have at the moment. I would be thrilled if someone would post attack speed data for the half orc but I don't think anyone has yet.

    Good catch.

If I wasn't using an eSOS for this calculation I would redo it and give more accurate numbers, but since the only special weapon effect that would be affected is 1 force damage I think I'll take the lazy route and say my results are +/- 1 damage per glancing blow.

Or maybe I'll correct this tomorrow... the more I think about this, the more it bugs me.
