Maybe it's just a cleric thing (who uses non-clerics? Hah), but a lot of times my hireling will just chill for a few seconds, sometimes more than a few, without joining the fray.
I tend to keep them on Active rather than Guard.
Sometimes I actually finish the fight without them moving and I say, "This is what I pay you for?"
Do others have similar experiences?

Are hirelings just sluggish to join combat?
