There's a number of different ways you can use your wizard. I would have to ask what your stats are first before I could offer solid advice -- like what feats do you have, and what enhancements did you choose? whether you can be an arcane archer or a necromancer, etc....

For instance, I have a necromancer with 19 str. for defense, 19 intel. for obviously spells, 11 wis. for some will save, 14 con, and 11 dex. But that's my peronal preference. I'm sure you have different stats. I think most will tell you to get a high intel, high con, medium str and dex.

My necromancer's focus is on Necromancy spells and enhancements focus mostly on spell penetration. But again, you can use any of these to shape your wizard, like if you want to be a firebug, you can focus everything on fire and use mostly fire spells, or if you want to use cold spells, or if you want to diversify, or become an illusionist, etc...

As for spells, I highly recomend Firewall. Treat it as if it's a body part, because you and other players are going to depend on it. Another one is Knock. Players will love you for it if there's no rogue in the party and there's a locked chest that needs opening.

Get at least one cold spell because there are a lot of fire creatures.

Anyway, I hope this gives you some insight into some of the different paths you can choose.

Ok, the thing about wizards is: you have more spells that you can actually use, several are redundant, some are only useful at certain times and certain others are never useful at all.

The simplest way to have the right spells ready at the right time is to ask your group what spells they want. They will tell you. Then, bring those spells and also bring any spells that seem useful for that particular mission. Then use them as instructed, when it seem appropriate. Rinse and repeat. When someone says “please don’t cast (Insert spell name here)” don’t cast it and later ask why they don’t want you cast it. If it seems like most groups don’t like that spell, don’t bother preparing it unless it is requested. As a wizard, you are basically a massive power-boost to groups and, if you need to know when to cast something, people will be happy to tell you.

Clothing-…ok. Assuming you don’t care about fashion, you are looking for robes that offer useful things. Most items that cast spells are so utterly terrible you won’t even remember why you wanted it after a few uses, so avoid those for the most part. You want items that block harmful effects, prevent bad things, etc. You also want at least 1 item that boosts health and another that boosts intelligence. You will have to replace them every levels or so, but it is worth it.

If you get incapacitated, things have already gone downhill. There is little you can do at this point, as a wizard, but wait for a heal. The moment you stand up, move away from whatever hurt you, self heal and make sure blur/displace is on you and anyone else nearby if it seems like it is needed.

Self healing- get points in UMD. This will allow you to use healing wands, which are available in Marketplace. Next, buy a large stack of the strongest healing potions you can find. Pricy? Yes. Worth it? YES!!!

Put the healing potions on your hotbar and, when you need a heal, drink 1 of the stronger ones immediately. If/when someone heals you; you will typically be healed up to full health after that, and if no one heals you, you can drink another powerful healing potion or a few weak ones until you are healthy again.

Buy wands of “False life”. Then use the wands to cast the spell. Do not cast the spell yourself, since the wand offer basically everything you need for no spell point cost. Know why you will do that? Every charge of the wand gives you health. The health is temporary, BUT when you get hurt, that temporary health is taken away first. It is basically you healing yourself, but even better because you can do it before you even get damaged. It’s a free 10 or 11 hitpoints.

    Nice spells/wands for new wizards-

Suggest- like charm person, but it works on many more enemies and lasts reliable amounts of time. A wand of suggest is a way of, possibly, saving a bit of your magic for later, so try casting it with the wand before casting the spell yourself. Be ready-Wand cast, then if it fails, cast normally.

Charm person/monster-same as above, but with a less reliable duration

Wands of fireball, scorching ray, frost lance, force missiles, and similar attack spells- a very efficient way to contribute without actually using spell points. For a good while, this is a decent way to harm enemies.

Blur- cast it on everyone in the group, especially melees, healers, rogues, bards, rangers, archers, yourself, the other yourself and also yourself. Yes, it is that useful; never go without it.

Web- this stops enemies from moving, making them sitting ducks. Very useful.

Displacement- this doesn’t last long, but it is very powerful. Cast this only before tough fights, on people who will be hit a lot.

Flame arrow- use a wand to cast this, then hand out flaming ranged ammunition to anyone who wants it. I only mention this because it is a cheap way to get large stacks of throwing weapons; you can throw one of these instead of casting a spell if the enemy will probably go down in 2 hits.

Haste-Even if the only thing you do is cast haste on everyone and then walk behind the group, you are still contributing a lot. This spell is amazing and everyone loves it. Never unprepared this spell.

Frost lance-a strong ice damage spell.

Repair spells- you can heal a warforged ally better than a ‘healer’ could. Only prepare these if you actually have a warforged ally with you. You can easily use a wand to do this most of the time, but actually having the spell prepared will keep that warforged very happy.

Heroism- makes almost everyone better at what they do. Melee guys? They attack better and do more damage. A guy taking down a trap? He will succeed more easily. Everyone? Boosted spell saves, so fewer enemy spells mess them up. You? You won’t fail concentration checks as easily, get tripped as easily and will hit enemies with weapons more easily, if you actually use weapons.

At level 7, you will get Wall of fire. You will be married to that spell for a long time, so learn to love the massive damage and efficiency it offers.

    Also...
    (Gimme some mo')
As a shorty playing in the front yard of the crib
I fell down, and I bumped my head
Somebody helped me up and asked me if I bumped my head
    I said "Yeah"
So then they said "Oh so that mean we gonna, you gonna switch it on em'?"
I said "Yeah, Flipmode, Flipmode is the greatest!"
because you know as a shorty, I was always told
That if I ain't gon' be part of the greatest
I gotta be the greatest myself

When you can apply that song to DDO, you will truly be a good wizard (Ok, just messing around right now, but I think the part before this earned it for me.)
