Lightbulb A Fun Idea for the Auction House

I think it would be cool if there were a super rare drop/end reward like an Auctioneer's Hat. If your Character wears the hat while using the Auction House, you can automatically win any single auctioned item by trading in your Auctioneer's Hat. The person that was auctioning that item would not receive any gold in the mail but would instead receive the Auctioneer's Hat for their use. When they use it, it passes to the next person, and so on.

What does the community think of this idea?

This would work well...until someone who was auctioning off a high-plat item in order to buy Shroud crafting materials got a Hat in their mail instead of several hundred thousand plat.

    umm, no.

    umm, no.
Agreed. Horrible idea. It would absolutely kill the AH for high end items.

It would still work. With the Hat you could then buy another insanely expensive item and post that instead. The Auction House already has a ceiling for prices... People looking to sell items for more than that take it to private trades already. I feel that the Auctioneer's Hat idea benefits outweigh your argument.

The good part happens when, after 2 months, enough hats have dropped that they're all in circulation among auction house users, making the price of anything you want to sell = HAT. Red Dragon Scale? HAT. +1 Light Mace? HAT.

    Agreed.

We'd be back to having LFMs up everywhere saying 'selling 3 Large Devil Scales, 450k PP each'.
    I don't have a zerging problem.

First off... Thats hilarious! +rep for you Yark!

Secondly... Instead of giving "Free Trades" for some worthless hat... how about a Rare Auctioneer's hat that boosts Haggle by +30 or +45 even. (so you dont get such a huge rip off in NPC trading)

Call it "Auctioneer's Visor of Free Trade" or some such.

What if the hat was unique, or only X could exist at any one time on each server? Once X number of hats are in circulation, they stop dropping. If a hat gets destroyed, another one can drop, keeping the number constant, but small enough not to cause widespread havoc with the AH economy.

I don't really think this is a great idea, but figured I would throw that in for debate just for fun.

Another idea (one that is only half-formed as I type this and obviously would need more work to implement properly) is what if the hat was tied to a promotion? At the end of the promotion, the hat is deleted from the account (or more likely traded to an NPC hat collector) and the holder receives a plat payout based on the number of times it was used and the current AH price of the auctions it was used on.

Naturally, when your item "sells" and you get the hat in the mail you don't know how much it's worth. Do you use it to snag another high plat item, or hold onto it hoping for a big cash payout (maybe make sure that there is a guaranteed minimum payout so people don't get totally hosed)?

That is a VERY interesting idea....

hehe... does your personal greed win out? or do you go for that nice item.... options options.

I think this fictional hat should only accrue BASE value of the items it buys. (not what its listed for)

I think you're right. Open to less abuse that way? I dunno.

I still think it would be a VERY unpopular thing to implement, but I also think that this might plant a seed for some cool promotion or new item down the line.

edit: and I just noticed that this was originally posted in the General section - can we get a mod to move it to Suggestions?
