Default How to Video on Shroud Puzzle Solver

Just wanted to share this video I made because I realized there a quite a few people who still don't know how to do the puzzles in Shroud.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIQudsPiBsc

Yes, I know, it's boring, but it gets the job done

It's a simple video on how to use the Shroud Puzzle Solver. Without having to jump up and down on the puzzle.

Hit "Edit" Twice to turn on all the lights inthe solver. Much faster thanturning them all on Indicidually.

Hm, this looks rather similair to what i've been teaching to random people in the shroud.

However, instead of using the puzzlesolver to find out which light to hit at the end, my method doesnt require a puzzlesolver since i would mirror the situation on the last line to the first line. And then do another top-down run.

Still, props to you man. Its nice to see something like this on the forums. People have been poking me for a while to get my method on the forums, and i never got around to it.

What do you mean mirror the situation on the last line to the first line?

Well, as an example, in Psymun's video he had the following situation:

    OOOOOO
    OOOOOO
    OOOOOO
    OOOOOO
    OOOOOO
    XXOXOX

I would jump on the top line to turn it into this:

    XXOXOX
    OXOXOX
    OOOOOO
    OOOOOO
    OOOOOO
    XXOXOX

And then flip em all again, top to bottom. Doesnt always work on a 6x6 however, but you wont see that in the Shroud.

Uhh I'm missing something but jumping on the top line to make XXOXOX doesn't give:

    XXOXOX
    OOOOOO
    OOOOOO
    OOOOOO
    OOOOOO
    XXOXOX

because the ones below the top line light up too when you jump on the top line. It gives:

    XXOXOX
    OXOXOX
    OOOOOO
    OOOOOO
    OOOOOO
    XXOXOX

Solving that down from the top line gives a bottom line of:

    XOOOOX which is not solved.

If your method works I must really be missing something here...

EDIT: Oh you edited. Yeah bad example then if it doesn't always work on 6x6. 5x5 I could see that but the solver keeps giving me "unsolvable" puzzles. Grr!

    EDIT2: For the 5x5

Everything but the following bottom row patterns gave "unsolvable" error.

    1) OXOXO
    2) OOXXX
    3) OXXOX
    4) XOXXO
    5) XXOXX

Your method of mirroring the pattern on the top works on all those, and saves having to remember the one to press on the bottom row to solve backwards from.

Yeah, i edited it. I figure it might have been confusing if i didnt picture it like it would look like during an actual execution. ^_^

And i know that the webbased puzzle-solver is very wonky on anything but a 6x6. That is why i use the updated version of that which is available in the Interactive DDO Game Guide for when-ever someone requires a visual aid.

As someone who started a thread recently on exactly this problem, I thank you for this video. I was actually expecting/hoping that it would show you actually solving the puzzle in-game, but I got the basic idea from just the solver. Conceptually I can understand why 'solving down' the first time doesn't require jumping, but it seemed to me that 'solving up' the second time would *have* to involve jumping, so I was very interested in the final part where you showed that wasn't true. So thanks for that.

I still would like a way to practice this on my own, though. Sigh.

Those interested in Solver-free puzzle solving may want to read this thread also

    http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=228976

Once I learned his method, I've never used a solver again.

There's a link in it to a pratice solver also, for anyone interested.

Edit: This method is the same as Nathlin's....it just explains how to mirror the top row to the bottom when doing the 3x3. In the 5x5 you can use row 2 to manipulate row 1 into mirroring row 5....it doesnt work like that in the 3x3.

Incidently, the circle is solved by picturing the circle as "rows" just like in the other cases.

Solve down, until your bottom row is the only one with unlit tiles.
Hit the top row tiles coresponding to the unlit bottom row tiles, then solve down again.

For example if the bottom row tiles after solving down are:

Both out, hit both top tiles
Left is out, hit the top left
Right is out, hit the top right
If neither is out....its solved...go get your water

It isnt the same, and no, it doesnt explain how to mirror the situation.

That thread you linked is actually the inspiration i used for using my method, so good find there. Still, SamX's method requires you to remember/memories the combination you need to put in at the other side of a 5x5 Puzzle. I didnt like that, so i worked on an idea to alter that, and came to mirroring the situation on the last line to the first line. Therefor, SamX's method isnt the same as mine. You can say however that it resembles alot.

As a note: SamX's method does allow you to solve a 3x3 faster then mine, but then you still need to remember which combination you need to use based upon which result on the 3rd line after 1 pass. See where i am getting at?

Your Method for the 5x5 is much easier and faster than Samx's....I will be using it from now on, thank you very much. You reach the same point in the road, with the top mirroring the bottom....you just get there easier and faster.

My point was more directed at the 3x3, you cannot stand on the middle row to light the top in the same fashion, and Samx's method is easier for me to get the top lighted correctly. I dont have to run randomly over the top row, or even have to think to light it correctly.....i just have to remember to hit the "corresponding tile, and its neighbors"

I've been in Shrouds where you have shown people how to do this...good work, it helps the community in general when people like you go out of your way to teach people, instead of berating them for their newbishness.

    No, it doesn't.

    Nope.

    1) Solve down.

    2) Whatever buttons are dark on the bottom, push those corresponding ones on the top, and the ones to the left or right of that--except ignore the right two columns when doing this on the 5x5. You may hit some buttons more than once, depending on how good you are at sorting things out in your head first.

    3) Solve down.

Your way is more straightforward (at least on the 5 x 5), but there's nothing to memorize doing it SamX's way either.

So I guess right now for puzzle-less solving I'd say:

    3x3: SamX's way.

    4x4: Solve down.

    5x5: Nathlin's way.

    Circle: Mentioned by Crann above.

Monastery: I still get my solver out. =P

    I'd Agree.

Anyone heard of a method like this for Monestary?

I personally just use the solver for monastery. I never have found an easier way for it.
