I sure as hell don't want to run with a caster who will loot levik's shield, a caster who loots the seal of earth/chattering ring, or in general looting things that have 0 benefit to their class (certain builds excepted, of course, but there's no way a pure 20 sorc is going to have a use for a seal of the earth). What will result is that nothing will ever get shared because people will just claim they got trash.

Dunno, something just sounds wrong with the idea.
I'm pretty sure that #1 above would be implemented in the UI/gameplay options, allowing you turn either enable/disable allowing others to view your loot.

As for #2, you sound like one of the poeple the OP was complaining about. Additionally, they may be planning on T'ing into another class when they hit level 20, so you have no idea what their plans are. Again, your loot is your loot, my loot is my loot. Entitlement is one of the biggest problems in this game.

The problem is that it is only your opinion the PvP balance is more important than how loot is shown. In mine, PvP is not only silly, it does not belong in this game.

Now so as not to compleatly continue the derail attempt here. The visibility of loot isn't the root problem here, the real problem is that people feel they should have a say in how someone else handles the loot the game gives them. The ability to hide your loot pulls would help mitigate the "you can't use that so you should put it up for a roll" mentality. As has been mentioned, every player can "use" any loot unless it actually has a restriction prohibiting them. Yes some loot is better for one type of character than another, but as has been pointed out TR's make that a dubious argument.

I maintain that if the Dev's envisioned that loot division be a party desision (as in the base game D&D) that loot would not be assigned. They could have several methods to handle loot, a vote system, a roll system, etc... All would likely slow down the looting of chests, but it could be done. Instead they have system assigned loot, if it has your name then it is yours, reguardless of whom could use it better. Those who give loot away, or put it up for roll, should be commended, but it has become an expectation not a good deed.

System assigned loot is the only fair way to ensure everyone gets loot at all; any other way, and only a few would actually get loot at all. I've seen it happen time and time again, where one player does the work, and another sweeps in and grabs the loot. THAT is ninja looting. Or groups where 1 or 2 people fill out needed spots, and are kicked or left out of getting any loot at all for their work, no matter how hard they worked for it. By having the system distribute each player something randomly, every player gets something.

I've seen games die because of this; as no one wants to be rewarded with nothing for their time. Rewards are often what brings people into a MMO game, the progression and advancement of the player's character.

The problem in DDO is that some people want a system where only they get any loot; that's why they argue so vehemently against not being able to see others' loot pulls. It drives them insane to think that they would not be able to browbeat, harass, and ridicule someone into handing anything they want over like a little sheep, or if they refuse to harass, ridicule, and slander that person in order to damage their reputation.

The actually loot system in terms of how it's handed out is fine in DDO (it could actually give out something useful outside of named items, but I digress). It's a group (hopefully a minority, but you never know) who can't stand the thought of them not getting it all, no matter that they're nothing but worthless pikers.

That is a gross assumption mate.

I am fairly new to the game and don't know what can drop in a quest.
Being able to look in the chest lets new players know what can be had.

See, that's exactly why chest loot should be see by all.

It lets everyone know who the whiners are so that they can be squelched. Which is the only real solution to this problem. If you pull something and someone begins to harass you over it...simply squelch them....problem solved.

Some people do plan to TR into a class which can use those possibly. Seems a bit rash of you to simply assume the fighter who took it won't be doing so. I for one do loot most things on my main (which I plan to take through many lives) even if it can't be used on my current life, perhaps on my alts I will put items I can't use for roll. I'd say at least inquire before simply hitting that squelch button

    Tharnes or Glacier?

...Because I'd say that the Bracers of the Glacier are actually more useful for a Fighter or Barbarian (or Bard) than for a caster. There's a whole lot of fire damage in this game. Being able to cut that fire damage in half is delightful. It's especially nice for a class that can't self cast any fire resist/protect buffs.

Compare that to the benefits that an Arcane or Divine caster gets from them.

Archmage - that's on lots of items now. I'd be shocked if you don't already have at least +150 SP item long before you even get a chance to /roll on the Bracers.

Glaciation - only works if you have 2 or 3 of the Glacier items. Even if you have all three, the easy to get belt from Amrath is still better and the belt doesn't take up a gear slot.

Spell Pen VIII - that's pretty nice for a Divine or Arcane caster.

In fact, a Divine caster would get more use out of it than an Arcane caster since Divine folks can't self-cast Fire Shield. Shame on all those Wizards and Sorcs who roll on the Bracers when they should be leaving it for a class that can really use it - like Clerics and FvS.

People SAY 'your loot is your loot' right up until you try to loot something they don't feel you 'deserve'. And then its 'OMG I'M GONNA BLACKLIST THIS GUY FOR TAKING HIS OWN LOOT!!!!'

For all you know the guy is one day away from his TR into a class that WILL use the loot. Either way it doesn't matter since it dropped for him and not you. Yet people get blacklisted over stuff just like that.

It's entirely stupid and i'd like the option to opt-out of it. Especially in pugs.

Yeah I don't get that AT ALL.

If someone wants something you pulled so badly, offer to buy it or trade for it. Getting upset at a player b/c the random number generator gods smiled on him and not you is bizarre.

what is less silly than pvp?

oh and on topic: i'd compromise. take out all the vendor trash from the loot list in party chat, but leave the raid items. I don't care who got the potion of paralysis removal, but i would like to know if the boots dropped for a wiz, cause then ill stick around long enough to see if she puts em up for roll.

that being said, i still think that your loot is your loot. if you want the shield on your sorc thats fine. far be it from me to say what is the right way for you to play your toon. similarly your rep is your rep, and if you get a rep as a greedy bastard who rides on the coat tails of others while picking their pockets, well its your rep.

I played AC2, so I log in everyday expecting to see a message that the servers will be ending in 4 months. As such, every day they don't is a good day!! Play like the world will end, because it will.

and unfortunatly thats the attitude that is most common. Why so negative. Why would said persons rep not be

Takes his own loot and doesnt roll on other peoples. Contributed to the quest and didnt pike or ride coat tails.

    This.

There's no corpse search in ddo, the chest takes care of that for you at the price of privacy.
It must surely be one of Leomund's famous spells, let's go blame him (or praise).

Now the important thing is that any loot rules like rolling and passing class stuff around should be arranged before the quest and not at the chest.
People is still free to ask for class items for the obvious reason, it should be no offense to either part.
And if denied they are free to rage in which case you just don't group with them.

Oh, I agree with you on this. I was just pointing out that the Devs wanted the loot system to assign loot to be a fair distrobution. They could have gane with a party decide option but didn't.

This won't solve the issue. When you loot items from a chest it is broadcast in the chat box. The OP's suggestion was to prevent the looted item from broadcast in chat.

Just a helpful hint! There is a thread that lists almost every single named Item in the game and where it drops!

A little research can go a long way!

    Viola!

My question here is how are you picking their pockets by collecting loot that is in your name? This is the problem in a nutshell, people think you are steeling from them by collecting your own loot.

If you roll on every piece of loot that drops when other people put stuff up for /roll and never put anything up yourself, that's pretty much what you are doing.

I don't mind at all when people loot their own stuff if they're going to use that loot. I don't even mind someone looting something that they think they'll use and then later change their mind and don't end up using it. Here's what I don't like:

People who roll on loot and then pass the loot to someone else when they win the roll. Don't roll on it if you aren't going to loot it yourself.

People who roll on an item before the item has been offererd for roll. Seriously? You can't wait 30 seconds for the person to read the item description before jumping on them?

People who loot stuff that drops in their name even though they know for sure that they will never use it.

Some other things annoy me too. Warforged looting an Icy would bother me, but I'd just ***** at them and not blacklist them.

I find it quite amusing how people lose thier sensibility when even discussing loot. There have already been a couple of non-opinion based reasons why loot should remain visible that have been completely ignored. This isn't about raid loot, it's about ALL loot.

Knowing who looted a vital quest item.

Education. This is a big reason to keep loot visible. There are quite a few people who may not realize how good a certain piece of regular loot can be until someone says "hey, grats on that pull!"

We've even used it to tell when someone has dc'd as it may be the only clue as to the last time someone was active.

Enough with the cockamamie facts and onto another opinion. I don't give a whit what you loot, I do however care WHEN you loot it. If you're so gung-ho on getting your loot that you're willing to let party members die, I want to know. If you're so greedy about getting your loot that you repeatedly can't wait for the person who's dc'd to log back on, I want to know. Keeping loot visible helps me to determine who's a team player and who only cares about loot.
