Default Question about monk sr on epic...

Is the monk spell resistance enough to stop an epic beholders energy drain? I think pure monks get an sr of 30 that seems like alot, but I'm not sure on epic.

Also rust monsters don't eat your handwraps/staff right just your items like helm, armor, necklace, ring etc., is that correct?

Thanks for your replies they are greatly appreciated.

spell resistance is never useful... Mantle of the worldshaper, beholder optic nerve, silver flame amulet. These are the way to go

A Monk's Spell Resistance doesn't block the beholder ray that produces negative energy drain as far as I remember. So no amount of SR will be enough.

If you want to ignore the Negative Energy Drain beam from the beholder, your choices are as follows:-

    1. Get the Silver Flame Pendant/Necklace from Necro II and Necro III chains. That will give you 5/10 charges to avoid the Negative Energy Drain beam until it's completely drained. The good thing about this item, is that is will automatically recharge all of it's charges from one rest.
    2. Get a Scarab of Protection. This has 12 charges when full as well as offering SR20. The drawback is that this item doesn't recharge, so it will run out quickly. It is also a random loot drop, so it's not a common item.
    3. Get a Scarab of Spell Absorbtion. This has 50 charges, but doesn't recharge. Also a random drop.
    4. Get the Mantle of the Worldshaper. This has 5 charges, and recharges 1 charge per rest. 100% drop end reward item in the Threnal series. Problem with this item, is it blocks other beams and spells too, so can quickly get drained...
    5. Beholder Optic Nerve. This has 8 charges, and recharges 8 per rest. Drops in Invaders quest when final boss is the beholder. Care needed as it blocks the other beams too, so can drain quickly...
    6. Pale Lavender Ioun Stone (locked). This has 20 charges when new, and doesn't recharge. Ultra-Rare drop. If you find one with suppressed power, unlock it to get the following...
    7. Pale Lavender Ioun Stone (unlocked). This has 50 charges, and recharges 15 per rest. It is bound to character though.
    8. Be a Warforged. They are immune to the Negative Energy Drain beam.

In Epic content the SR30 will not really be that useful for the following reasons:-

    1. All the mobs cast are damage spells (which in DDO bypasses SR checks)
    2. They cast spells that ignore SR checks (which really should be altered).
    3. Their Spell Penetration check is high enough to go through your SR of 30 in almost 90% of the cases.

As for your Handwraps and Rust Monsters, yes, that is more or less the case. The HW are one of the least likely affected items, but primarily it's when you are attacking Rust Monsters, when it's more obvious. Typical gear will get damaged on hitting the rust monster too, the HW won't be, but HW are... a bit of a special case in DDO due to the way they are coded. But overall, yeah, what you said is accurate.

These two posts above me have much truth.

    Short answer, no. Long answer,

I do think SR applies to casting of an Energy Drain (Confirmed via DDO Wiki), BUT:

Monk SR is... 30 at level 20, yes?

To overcome Spell Resistance = Caster Level + Spell Pen Items + Spell Pen Feats + Spell Pen Enhancements + d20 Roll.

So... these Beholders are CR 32 maybe? I dunno, I'm tossing that number out there. They probably are considered the same, if not better, than a level 20 caster.

A lvl 20 "Adventurer" Sorcerer, the most basic sorc in the game, can have Spell Pen, Greater Spell Pen feats, the three enhancements, and then a Spell Pen VIII Item. That will give them if I recall correctly a +29 to their d20 roll. A d20 can low as low as a "1".

1 + 29 = 30. On the lowest roll, your SR is still overcome. By a caster that is probably statistically inferior to Epic Beholders.

J1NG and r3dl4nce have the right idea. Gear-based spell absorption. Good luck to you.
