    Default Fix the Flaming Sphere

Seriously, this spell is possibly the most glitched one I've come across...and I travel with level 20 wizards often when I'm favor farming ><

Right now what it effectively does is roll around "veeeeery" slowly and randomly roll to various targets...which often either doesn't work or screws up.

Instead of making it roll around slowly and pointlessly, why not just make it roll forward in the direction the caster is facing? So since I'm OCD about stepwise stuff :x

    1. Caster faces a group of enemies
    2. Caster uses Flaming Sphere
    3. Flaming Sphere moves towards the targets at 2/3 normal movement speed
    4. Once the sphere has moved farther than 100 ft. + 10 ft./level it dissipates
    5. Inflicts 2d6 fire damage each time it rolls into an enemy (reflex save for half)

    That's a spell I'd use more often.

before they changed waterworks I used to go in there with tons of scrolls and just drop my lowbie firewall on the mobs down in the lower area where you free arlos.

it never works like it's supposed to for my mage :/ it just rolls around aimlessly (often targetting dead enemies) and does nothing.

If I'm not mistaken the Flaming Sphere is a conjuration spell. So it would work like a Summons.

    I always considered it a "mini-fire-elemental" with a mind of it's own.

look again, it's evocation. So it shouldn't work like a summon, it should either be completely under the caster's control or have a set path it has to follow

Also it will rarely hurt party members. As long as it's going to be fixed, it may as well be good and fixed.

I prefer the 'seek and destroy' method much more than just 'roll along and dissipate'. It's always worked for me, don't use it against things with Evasion though...or if you do, prepare for it to take awhile.

If the sphere would actually roll towards your marked target that could improve the spell a lot. I also have noticed it going somewhere totally useless.

Heck, I'd just be happy if they disipated once the caster was slain like other duration spells after U5.
Wandering around Necro I with an enemy's flaming sphere nuzzling me is endearing, but annoying!

The sphere is supposed to move at walking speed, but it seems a bit slower to me (I may be wrong).

Apart that, and the fact that you should be able to direct it according to the books (quite difficult to implement here), it's working as intended.

Oh, and yes, it should be extinguished when the wizard cannot direct it anymore (i.e. he's dead, Jim).

And here I thought this thread would be about Mentau's Plaht Device.

But yeah, outside of its post-mortem persistence, there's really not much to fix.

Maybe it can benefit somewhat from the "useless spells" overhaul that's been mentioned...

Of course, it would benefit from an overhaul of it's damage output.

Dispel magic gets rid of them, in case you didn't know.

I'd like to be able to balance on top of my flaming sphere like the Hellhounds in the Big Top quest. Please make this happen asap. mwah.
