Default Total Mod for Open Locks skill; what is the magic number?

I am at level 9 now, with DEX=24, which is +5 to Open Locks and trying to figure out how many Skill Points I need to use to Open Locks at level 20

What "Total Mod" number do I need to get to in order to open level 20 locks?
therefore, how many Skill Points do I need to use, without wasting points?

Its kind of a trick question... are you looking for the total mod to open level 20 locks on a roll of 5? Keep in mind, that on a natural 20, you can open any lock in the game, so you can actually have a pretty low open lock skill, and open any lock with little patience. Just keep clicking till you roll that 20.

With a +15 open lock item, and +5 thieves tools and a decent Dex (in the high 20s, low 30s), you can open 90% of the locks in the game with a mere 1 skill point in Open Lock...

I'd still max it out or get at least 10 skill points if I was a mostly rogue character with tons of skill points.

It is like going to a museum and bragging about how fast you made it through. Or bragging about how fast you finished a good steak.

That's not true. Natural 20 automatic successes are only for saving throws and attack rolls. Just like 1's are only automatic failures for the same.

While the ominous trap in 'Cabal for One' has a search and disable DC of 50+ and you need to reach that value to not screw it up a Lock on a treasure chest or door can be repeated as long as you have lock picks in your inventory. So it may take a while to open one by rolling high enough but you will not screw it. Not to mention that quests like 'The Tear of Dhakaan' which previously had most shrines behind a locked door have been changed and no pick-lock is needed anymore at all. So to say that skill is one of the ones that have the lowest importance, especially in end-game (For example the lvl 20 Quest 'The Dreaming Dark' has 0 locks to pick)

Sadly but true the rogue skills are less important in this game then high damage, constitution and fortification.

Considering that a Rogue with high UMD even can use Wands of 'Knock', that skill boosts, items (+13 open lock ring) as well as clickies and potions (e.g. Heroism) can boost skills high enough a base lock pick of 20 will probably pick already everything (buffed you may easy reach 50+). As a rogue has plenty of spare points I would throw some bones in it but not really bother with it. If you look in the builds posted in the Forum you will see that even multi class rogues go fine with 20-35 points and I never have heard complains about a them not being able to open something.
    * We have collectable bags, mind you, even hireling folders, but can I have that 6-pack for my potions please?
    * Having already a past life on the dieng EU servers, I rerolled here and started from scratch as I like the game and the community, so lets see what awaits me here

The highest lock dc's in the game are 90. There are only 2 that I know of that require this much.

    1. The door to the chests in Epic Von 1. The one you get the key for after killing Grogan.

    2. The chest in the north wing of Von 5 on epic.

Not that these are must have locks to open but if you are gonna run von 5 on epic you might wanna be able to get as many chests as possible due to the time that can be spent to run these.
