    Default combat log export

It's september! Another month, another time for me to please ask the devs to please add an ability to export/spool the contents of a chat window and/or combat log to a text file so offline analysis on e.g. to-hit, AC, etc etc can be done on the file.

    Thanks for reading!

Just minutes ago I mentioned the value of that feature in another thread:
    http://forums.ddo.com/showpost.php?p...&postcount=135

    ----
This brings up a very important topic of game development methodology:

Although there are downsides to saving the combat logs to a parsable format, games such as World of Warcraft do gain the important benefit of having objective performance quantifications that are fairly accurate and easily accessible. (eg http://www.maxdps.com/warlock/affliction.php) So much of the effort it takes to figure out improvements to DDO is wasted on what should be simple questions of what the character's current DPS and DPM numbers even are. You can't solve a problem without first showing that there is a problem.

(This is worsened by the difficulty of respeccing a DDO character, which makes it hard for one player to try one build and then change to the alternative and test again)
    ----

Although there are positives to making it hard for players to figure out the exact numbers going on, they can only potentially kick in once the developers have already achieved a good gameplay balance themselves. That is clearly not nearly the case with DDO.

    This.

I would love to have a combat log dump to a .txt file where I can look it over.

Been asking for such for years... had written my own wrapper to pull it on input but after removing and reinstalls lost it. Would be nice to have it again.

If someone had a third party program that filtered out combat chat and dumped it to a txt file would it be against the terms of service to use it?

Pretty much. But the issue then is because you are looking only data that is incoming and not modifying at all before passing it on, how would they ever know?
