Default How do raid chests work?

So all game long it's click on a chest and get your loot.
Now it's different in raids? The other night I pulled a shield on my sorc. It was my second or third raid completion. I had no idea I even had it until the raid was over and I was going through inventory. And look back through he chat log I could see I #@%&^ up.

So how does chest looting work in raids? In other games i've played the group leader has control of the chest and you roll on high value items based on class and need. Somehow I ended up with this shield which I couldn't even give to someone else in the raid cause it was bound. I guess the only good that came out of this is I TR'ed the sorc to a FVS.
But I would like to avoid this noobness again in the future by know a little bit about the mechanics of raid loot.

Well the shield you pulled was probably raid loot which binds when you get it. Normally when people pull something on a character that they can't use it for normally either put it up for a roll or give it to a guildie that can use it since you can't auction it or trade it.

It works the same as regular loot, the only difference is raid items for the most part are bound to character. There should have been a warning box that popped up, maybe you clicked yes instinctively, but it should have been there.

Your loot is your loot, you can do whatever you want with it. It's just courteous if you put up an item you cannot use for roll (because its bound to character, so it ends up vendor trash, whereas someone could have been aiming for the same item for months).

Each person in the raid has a one in six chance of getting a piece of raid loot. Sometimes you'll get skunked, and sometimes you'll get lots of stuff, but the average is two raid items per raid. Almost all raid loot binds to character on acquire, so if you pull something that the character you are on cannot use, it is common courtesy to put it up for roll. Declare the item and a die roll in party chat, and anyone interested will roll for it. You can then reassign it to another player using the drop-down menu while it is still in the chest.
