This started soon after the disappearance of Turbine Download Manager, with the (in)famous XMLException:

But the game itself still was working fine.
Then, Update 6 came. Oddly, my client didn't receive any updates.
A few days after U6, a very small update was downloaded (it took maybe half a second), but nothing changed.
My loading screen still showed "Update 5 now available!"
Sometimes an error message would pop on my screen for half a second after I chose the server. The message was something like "The supplied update download list is not valid for this version of the client", but I couldn't take note of it as it disappeared very quickly.
I had enough: fully uninstalled, re-downloaded, re-installed.
Now I still get the XMLException error, no updates, and my loading screen is a white grid on a grey background.

UPDATE
Reinstalling the game client fixed the update problem, but not the XMLException and the missing loading screens.
These seemed to be related, so I further investigated until I found an empty "DownloadFilesList.xml" in my local user profile folder.
I let the launcher game re-create the file and voilĂ*, all working now.
