    Default Barbarian build

Hey guys this is my first build. The goal of this build is mainly solo with hireling support. I wanted to splash rogue instead but I guess after reading I would never be able to keep my skills up in DD OL and Search / spot.

So I played around with with this fighter / barb build. I have this build more or less at lvl 12 as of next friday pending my (hopefully) last reinc.

Also please note I debating on my lvl 18 feat between GTHF and Luck of Heroes or Iron Will.

Again this is mainly for solo and since I cant disarm traps I would want to resist them? I guess trap save should save me from a flamethrower or too?

No feat at level 9? You should take improved crit at 9 rather than 15, but you're still missing that one feat.

Also, you don't have listed your ability points from level ups, or your skills. 12 intelligence seems high to me. I'd personally never push it above 8 unless I'm taking rogue or wizard levels. You can dump int and bump con up to 18. Or if you're really concerned about your reflex save (for traps), you can bump dex to 14 and wis to 12 (for will save). 18 con seems like the better choice, since it not only gives you more hp, but also makes your rage longer.

    Pick up Dwarven Axe Attack

    Pick up more Extra Rage

    Drop some Improved Trap sense

    Pick up Fighter Str I

Put points into spot over listen

    Pick up quick draw (feat)

If you learn to twitch you can completely drop the THF line and replace them with extra feats.

I would pick Luck of Heroes to round up the saves. May be take all the toughness, and constitution enhancements.

Thanks I didnt realize I missed at feat at lvl 9!

I can not raise spot any higher, I tried but it is a cross skill so I am maxing it every time I can : /. I wish I could figure out how to raise that and search much higher then they are currently.

I did not take Fighter Str 1 since it would leave me with uneven Str. I might take this though if I end up with odd strength somehow later on

I do not find changing weapons to be an issue overall.

I did the trap sense because I usually solo a lot and I do not like getting destroyed by traps. I usually bring a cleric hireling or two with me (gold contracts) and just go along my way sadly.

I actually find myself not using rage at all...I like Frenzy better since there is no fatigue but I try to use Divine something or other from my cleric to remove it when the rage wears off. I use rage only for the last boss or so

My attack usually never seems to be an issue. I have a Great Axe +5 right now and I run around with PA on and I dont miss a lot

    Thanks for the feedback!

At 17 Barb you will get tireless rage, which means no more fatigue, although at that point the extra duration from +2 con won't matter much. I would take the hardy rage enhancements instead of trap sense, but I understand why you would rather have those, and there's nothing else you can give up for it. Too bad it doesn't help your hireling, though (traps tend to destroy hirelings pretty fast).

I'm curious. Why are you taking search skill? If it's for secret doors, you can easily get a clicky for those.

The best way to increase your survivability against mobs would be to use rage every chance you get, even with the fatigue. Yes, it goes away at level 17 with Tireless Rage, but up until then, you can use a lesser restore potion to clear it.... they are probably the best investment in consumables a barbarian has - they'll cure stat damage and ray of enfeeblement also. At your level, you should be able to afford to buy them in bulks of 100, especially at the guild potion vender.

If you still have rages left when you reach your shrine, and you weren't raged 100% of the time, you didn't use your rages aggressively enough. The added damage and HP from raging is too important to give up... might as well be a fighter

On trap survival, don't forget uncanny dodge - it can save your skin and usually has enough uses that you won't run out before the next shrine

no, sorry but I dont mean to bag on your build but usually you want starting stats like this: 18 str, 10 dex, 18 con (+2 from dwarf), 8 int, 8 wis, 6 cha if its a 28 pt build, if its 32 then: 18/12/18/10/8/6.

Just gonna say no to the trap saves because no evasion and if you're a barb healing with a hireling clr, you shouldnt need saves for high hp.

Search, why? I can vaguely understand spot but search and not being part rogue? main skills I would go for is: jump, swim, balance, intimidate.

also, why haggle? to make selling your weapons and items slightly better? it doesnt affect selling them that much.

switch around imp crit: slash and stunning blow.

you missed an ability upgrade at lvl 4 as well

Without rogue levels search and spot are of very limited usability because you won't be able to find anything above dc 20 which is probably around the level range you're at at the moment.
You could pick up open lock for those points if you wanted, 11 will be enough to open pretty much anything and you don't need to drop rage to pick something (as opposed to doing trap stuff).

If you took fighter strength I and dropped Power rage IV that would net you 2 ap.

Loose Extend rage IV and Trap sense IV and pick up Hardy rage I,II,III and one constitution II for a net gain of 40 hp, 2 fortitude save and no change to the duration of your rages.

Don't get luck of the heroes. Your will saves will not be great anyways, your fortitude saves don't need a boost and reflex is helped more by taking lightning reflexes or take resilience and toggle it to run through traps.
Another alternative would be brutal throw to add some ranged capability with a dwarven thrower (crits for 200 on my barb) or an extra toughness feat (overkill in my opinion).

Finally, get used to being raged, at lower levels you indeed will only be able to use it before tougher fights, later on though you do have enough rages for 30 minutes or so and at lvl 11 you need'nt worry about fatigue because the heal spell cures it and your hirelings do cast that at this level.

    Feats:
    Power Attack
    Cleave (frenzied berserker)
    THF
    ITHF
    GTHF
    Improved Critical
    Toughness or Stunning Blow

    Fighter Bonus Feats
Toughness or Stunning Blow – whichever you didn’t account for already
    IDK, whatever you like

Luck of Heroes is wasted, as gear/buffs will take care of your saves.

You can safely dump wis to boost con, will saves won’t be a problem with buffs/rage.

Don’t need search, clickies and eventually true seeing gear will get doors.

You need a really good reason to not go pure. 18/2 with fighter or thief is OK.

18/1/1 doesn’t get evasion or the +1 fighter strength.

Otherwise looks like you’ve got a pretty good grasp on the situation.

I am not big on going pure since I play solo A LOT more then I group.

I am trying to build a dungeon crawler guy that can handle almost anything with a cleric hireling.

I would go 1 rogue since from what I am reading 4 levels of lock pick with gear and +5 tools is enough to get most chests and doors.

I would go 1 fighter simply for the extra feat. 2 rogue doesnt get me anything since evasion and uncanny dodge dont stack from my understanding.

And 2 fighter for +1 str is not worth not being able to open chests and doors to me.

I am thinking take toughness and stunning blow and leave out GTHF since from what I read after last patch it doesnt do anything and then grab skill focus Open Lock for the +3.

I am going to try to max my toughness enchancements since I want the HP to live through traps and just to survive in general.

But yea if i I was going pure I would obvisously be more focus on DPS. Or If I had friends to fill these roles lol

Evasion is not the same thing as uncanny dodge. Evasion means when you pass reflex saves you take no damage. Uncanny dodge simply gives a short-duration bonus to reflex saves and AC. They can work together to really help when needing to run through a nasty trap or other reflex save heavy area.

My pure barbarian soloed without the aid of hirelings to level 11. Hirelings and the occasional group/raid took him the rest of the way. He doesn't have toughness, having taken stunning blow instead.

Stunning blow will go a log way to helping you solo when monsters start taking more that a hit or two to go down.

Also, keep in mind that you lose 4 str for not going pure. The fighter splashes mitigate the loss with the +1 enhancement.

I think the 18/2 with thief splash would do what you want. Toughness isn't required for a barbarian unless you're tanking in raids. Even then you can do OK so long as the healer pays extra close attention to you.
