I have some vacation time coming up. I'll be trapped on the beach with no electricity, so I might have to read something.
What I like:
China Mountain Zhong - In a future world dominated by resurgent Chinese nationalism, a Chinese-American youth tries to find himself.
The Book of Salt - 1920's Paris, a Vietnamese man tries to come to terms with racism, colonialism and exploitation. He has a love affair with Ho Chi Minh. This is the most beautiful book you never read.
The Name of the Rose - Murder in a monastery, and oh yeah, they also find the meaning of truth.
Instance of the Fingerpost - Murder at Oxford, Charles II is king of England, and they find the meaning of truth.
HMS Surprise - Jack Aubrey sails around the world, eating, drinking, shooting French people and playing his violin. His Friend Stephen finds a rare bird.
The First Man in Rome - Roman generals try to kill each other. Roman lawyers sue each other. Roman ****s seduce each other...
So those are some of my favorite books. Any suggestions for this summer?
I just have time to order from Amazon before I leave town.
