Default starting character hit rate off?

So I rolled up my first Rogue, 32 point build. Here are the attributes:

    Starting
    Abilities Base Stats
    (34 Point) (Level 1)
    Strength 16
    Dexterity 16
    Constitution 14
    Intelligence 14
    Wisdom 8
    Charisma 10

Character is an elf, and weilds a rapier. It seems like only 33% -50% of my strikes actually make contact. I'm getting an aweful lot of misses. Only feat I have is Toughness.

    Is this normal?

    Thanks!

Are you using one or two rapiers? If just one, you shouldn't have any trouble hitting on an quest at your level on Normal or Hard, at least.(Probably fine on Elite as well) Moving would be another -4 penalty, but that shouldn't be that much of an impact on the lower difficulties.

At lower levels, people prefer to use sword and board style, usually a small shield that doesn't incur attack penalty.

The extra survivability is nice too, since AC matters as much as to hit at those levels.

Also, since Update 5, the two weapon fighting only gives you 40% off-hand procs, which combined with the non-light weapon -4 penalty(say using another rapier), makes for a very sad dps.

So yeah, maybe you can off-hand a light weapon with cool effects(dagger/light mace/etc)

That might be about right, depending on what you are swinging at and what gear you have. A monster with an AC of 16 (many have that) means you need to roll a d20+your Melee to hit bonuses (from all sources) and get to a 16 or higher total to hit your target.

A 1st level rogue has no class based to hit bonus = 0
16 STR or DEX (if you have weapon finesse) both give a +3 to bonus.

A +1 or masterwork weapon gives a +1 to hit bonus.

So right off the boat, with nothing new, you have a +4 to hit bonus, before any spells or feats or enhancement points spent.

D20+4 = 16 or higher means you need to roll a 12 or higher. That is only 45% of the time you swing.

Add in stuff like Goggles of Insight (Korthos) +1 to hit, Angers Wrath Set (+2 to Hit), Aid spell (from bracers) +1 to hit, Flanking bonus (when with an ally) for +2 to hit and now you are adding +10 to the D20 and hit on a 6 or higher which is 75% of the time.

What are you fighting and at what difficulty level?

The AC scales up very fast on Hard->Elite. Especially on those kobolds. You probably don't notice it on a melee but you will on a rogue. What I do is to complete Normal on the quests at level before going back for Hard/Elite on the lower level quests.

Thanks for the responses. I was using two weapons, which I see now is a mistake. Back to one weapon for a while...

Using double negatives because he doesn't not afraid of anything.
