Default Bastion of the Outlands? What?

Okay, I don't know how they may have changed it for the better during this recent update (I don't even know how bad it was. Heck, I don't even know how you build a Bastion of the Outlands!), and this is sort of a delayed reaction, but...

I never got this. Why does the most offensively oriented class in the game get a defensive build? What, do they wield a one-handed axe and a shield?

Bleh, doesn't make sense to me.

Also, is anyone else bothered by the fact that pretty much the only race that can LOOK like a Barbarian is Warforged? I mean, Human males have very little muscle, human females even less, dwarves are too short... Warforged are tall and have "muscle".

Regardless, I don't like playing as a WF Barbarian because of healing penalty, and all I can think about is the poor Cleric that'd have to party with me, even if I have a rank or two of Healer's Friend.

    1. You don't build a BotO... the computer does it for you.

    2. In terms of the premade Barb builds, BotO isn't the dps build... Savage of the Wild is.

    3. Why someone would want to have a barb with a sword and shield.... I dunno. People are strange. IMHO, it should be a severe gimp penalty if a barb uses a shield.

    4. My dwarven barb very much looks a barb. I'd agree with you on elves and halfings

    5. If you feel sorry for the cleric, ask the wizard/sorcerer why they aren't using the repair spell to heal you. Or buy some scrolls and give them to someone to heal you.

    6. If you still feel sorry for the cleric, finish the quest, then press the X button, look at all your kills, scroll down and look at the deaths section. If you're not close to the top of your kills section (some quests are the exception) and if your cleric has died during that quest because you couldn't kill fast enough.... feel bad. Otherwise... don't

    SHIELD!?!?

A barbarian with a shield! That's unthinkable! Insanity! Blasphemy!

Do they even have proficiency with shields? They shouldn't. I don't care what the rulebook says, they still shouldn't.

Ugh, the day I start seeing barbs running around with shields is the day I need to start drinking.

Shields, what the hell is this game coming to?

hey! Halfling Barbarians have the greatest awesomeness per pound ratio of any class/race combo in the game.

How often do you think about hte "poor clerics" when you're on your fleshy and get Neg leveled, Sickened, Poisioned, or diseased?

Its not hard to get a reasonable amount of healing amp.

Historically "Berserkers" often did have Shields. and sometimes not much else =D

If my Barbarian could go around painted blue with Tall Orange Hair wearing "decency" straps she would!

    Beware the Halfling Picts!!!

And who was confused about this? You're answering questions no one asked.

Agreed. I just don't see how it's possible for a Barbarian to be defensive without a shield. At all.

The entire purpose of this topic is questioning the existence of such a prebuilt. That's all.

    4. My dwarven barb very much looks a barb. I'd agree with you on elves and halfings

It's hard to be intimidating when you come up to the waist of the frail elven mage standing next to you.

    5. If you feel sorry for the cleric, ask the wizard/sorcerer why they aren't using the repair spell to heal you. Or buy some scrolls and give them to someone to heal you.

Because arcane casters tend to have the attitude of "Durr, I'm the damage dealer and crowd control. Healing is the Cleric's job."

Although to be honest, that's still a good idea.

    6. If you still feel sorry for the cleric, finish the quest, then press the X button, look at all your kills, scroll down and look at the deaths section. Off topic but I've always noticed and pointed out that my WF axe is bigger than a Halfling but have never checked if a Halfling's axe is bigger than a Halfling.

On topic I do like a shield when tanking in Reaver's Fate but I've not done that in a while.

Healing penalty shouldn't matter, pots for low levels, Heal for high levels.

I suppose... though at the same time, it seems like cure light wounds pots drop more often than oils of light repair.

Oh I see. You're unaware of the potion vendors. In the middle of the market under those big red streamer type things there is a guy who sells potions.

He sells many potions you may like, including repair light damage and repair moderate damage.

You can sell all those crappy pieces of loot you get and then work your way up to buying stacks of 100 of such potions, and using them to heal yourself between fights.

Ah... I wasn't aware that, during low level content, people actually BOUGHT potions.

Out of curiosity, how am I supposed to afford better weapons if I'm buying potions?

People usually spend too much money on weapons and too little on the rest of their equipment and/or consumables.
Having a level apropriate weapon that works against most enemies you face is enough (most of the time). Something like Flaming/Shock/Acid of Pure Good.

If you have a Bastion of the Outlands, you're already gimped. Might as well invest in haggle!

Well, seriously as a barbarian all you need is a weapon that you like(greataxe, greatsword, falchion, maul, etc.) with the highest plus available to you.

Turn power attack on. If you don't have it take it as soon as possible.

Smite your enemies with your powerful attacks. Keep moving. Stay alive. With good groups it'll be easy. With other groups it will become tougher.

In low level content it is easy enough to be able to one two or three shot enemies. Trip is your friend. With a high strength it will work in low level content.

Once you're level 8-10 you can look for a better weapon. Until then its easy enough to just use a +3/4/5 weapon(Except in Deleras, where you need good aligned damage to bypass ghostly skeleton DR. Look for flame touched iron. Its cheaper than holy or pure good.)

Spoken like someone who didn't really even read the first post :P

I was criticizing Bastion of the Outlands for merely existing. This should indicate I haven't taken it.

Default Why does Bastion of the Outlands exsist

It's a febel attempt by Trubine to show that barbs can be decent tanks, though bastion of the outland sucks.

think about it: u have high HP and a constant DR just for living, u have a damage reduction enhancement u can take, and due to ur high con ur rages will last for a very long time. rages that give you even more hp. add good AC to that and, in theory, u should be able to soak up all the punishment you want and shurg it off.

not sure if it would put u on the same level as a fighter tank though.

Well, I guess they could be Intimitanks that use HP and DR instead of AC (that is, they take all the DR enhancements and use the DR Action Points)

But... wouldn't you sacrifice quite a bit of offensive power by doing that?

A barbarians defensive power is his number of HP. In low level content you suck down potions or provide wands to clerics/casters(WF).

In high level content a heal spell is all that is needed. The thing you need to balance is your ability to kill versus the amount of SP the cleric has.

Against big bosses(Horoth) you simply have to have enough HP to take his swings(much easier now with exhaustion landing on him) and also enough DPS to maintain agro. The latter being very very easy.

I meant to type offensive in that last sentence. I typed defensive instead.
