    Default heighten and spell penetration

If I cast a 7th level spell with with heighten active, do I still get the benefit of my spell penetration VII or would I need spell penetration IX (which I have never seen)?

The spell is still a lvl 7 spell. Heighten raises the cost to cast and the DC to the highest level spell you can cast. Spell Pen 7 will still apply to FoD.

Highten has nothing to do with spell penetration. It has to do with the spell DC. Mobs with spell resistance make 2 rolls. One to see if the spell "penetrates", then if it does, another roll against the DC of the spell. Highten will only help in the later.

shablala, I believe the OP meant that they were confused as to whether heighten raises the level of a spell used or if it simply boosts the DC. The first would mean that Potency, spell penetration items and all other such things only reaching say...level 7 wouldn't affect the spell anymore because it became level 8.

To my knowledge, heighten merely increases the spells DC. So yes. your spell penetration item will still work on the spells, just as Bradley said.

Technically, it's the caster of the spell that makes the Spell Penetration roll, much like an attack roll.

Thanks for the responses. I was pretty sure that this was the answer, but I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't costing myself spell penetration by heightening my spells.
